Picked up my brp card and have question
« on: June 12, 2017, 04:17:35 PM »
I was for some reason under the impression that my nhs number would be on the card.  Is it one of the several numbers on the card?  If not, had w do I get an nhs number.  Apologies if this has been answered several hundred times.

No, you don't get an NHS number until you register with a GP - it's basically just a way to track your medical records in the NHS computer system.

To get one, you'll need to check which GP surgeries in your area are taking new patients (http://www.nhs.uk/Service-Search/GP/LocationSearch/4) and also wait until you have some mail in your name, as you will need proof of UK address to register. Then you go to the GP and ask to register, and they will give you a form to fill out :).

Sometimes they put NI (National Insurance) numbers on the BRP card, but I think they are currently only doing that for Tier 2 work visas.

For the National Insurance number, if it's not on the BRP card, you apply for one here:
https://www.gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number

In case anyone else is wondering:

I called to apply for an application for the NI number. Seriously.

I waited on hold for ages and then talked to someone who asked a lot of questions about my visa, nationality, work status, etc. (Some of the questions were ridiculous, like "Has your visa expired?")

In 7-10 business days, I'll get a NI application in the mail. I'm supposed to fill that out. Not sure if I mail it in or bring it somewhere for an interview.

Then it will take 3-6 weeks to get a number.

But I'm allowed to work even before getting the NI number. How, I have no idea.

I'll have the fun of trying to get registered at a GP tomorrow. I sort of thought that reunion would be a tiny bit more romantic than this. :P

Yes, coming on a spouse visa, if you apply before FLR, you can apply by post.

It's right about being able to work without a number, they will just tax you at the higher emergency rate until it comes through. You'll get the tax back.

You mail it in. Everything is done by mail here. EVERYTHING. Make sure you read everything on the application. I was stupid and forgot to send something in with my application (Passport maybe, because that's where my visa is? It was 2+ years ago, so I forget exactly) and they sent it back as rejected, no proof of visa (oh yeah, it was the passport/visa). So I had to start the whole process over again - call, get application, wait, fill it out, send it in properly, wait...etc. I did mine way before I got a job though so I didn't have to worry about being taxed wrong. You have a job already though, right? It was weird not to have to pay tax for my first 9 months of working...they just don't tax you until you make over the initial threshold.

But I'm allowed to work even before getting the NI number. How, I have no idea.

It's your visa that allows you to work, not the National Insurance number.

The NI number is just used to work out how much tax and NI contributions you have to pay each month.

If you start working before you have the NI number, you'll just be taxed at the 'emergency tax' rate... and then when you get the NI number through, you can get the tax rate adjusted. If you have paid too much tax before getting the NI number, you'll get a refund :).

After I graduated uni, I worked in retail for a year. Despite having had an NI number since I was 16 (which is when Brits get one), I was put on the wrong tax code... and didn't realise it until I'd been there almost a year. I contacted my tax office to get it corrected... and they sent me a cheque for £1,500 for overpayment in the previous tax year, then for the next 6 months or so, I got a credit on my tax each month until I had received all the money back :).

I'm retired and do not intend to get a job.  Does this mean I do not need an ni number?

My husband can't work but HMRC recommended that he apply for one anyway, even though they gave him a UTR (unique taxpayers reference) They actually gave him a temporary NI number too.
Also, some financial products ask for one on the application form.

It's as well to have one.

Yeah to back onto ksand's story, you really do need to check it cause it happened to my husband too.

My UKC husband was taxed the emergency rate even though his work knew that this was his first job, and he had the NI (obviously). He didn't catch it for about eight months until he finally noticed that his tax rate was much higher than his co-worker's, who was in the exact same situation.

He called HMRC to check, and he did get a refund of close to £3k.

Always pays (literally) to double check everything.

My nhs number was assigned after I went to my GP. Just make sure whoever you choose go in, with proof of address and your brp. They will registar you and get your  number ready and waiting for your first appointment. You dont have to do anything for it really.

NI number has been a pain. Im working without it, but i got my application, sent it in the 10th of May, got it back the 25th saying i hadnt signed an amended part of it (i signed and dated the whole thing why send the whole thing back) so that was sent back and still waiting. As far as I know we dont have to do any interview with the job centre because we got our visa's from outside the country, but I could be totally wrong! I had like no tax taken last month really though.

Still waiting, but at least its in process and its really the last thing I need to sort. Bank account is open, all bills in joint name and paper statements go into a file to save for the next application!

Correct.  So long as the visa you applied for outside the UK allows work you don't need an interview.  If you had arrived on a fiancé visa and switched to FLR(M), you would have to go for an interview... which is just someone else filling out the application for you!

I am ashamed to admit I recently discovered I was paying the emergency tax rate.  I had a massive underpayment the prior year so when my pay check dropped, I thought it was due to the prior year underpayment.  Good news is I just called about it and the underpayment is now paid off and I'm getting a small refund!   :)

What is the amended part that needed to be signed? There is SO much paperwork to do, and I don't want to wait any longer than necessary. Haven't even gotten to call the GP yet.

Has anyone else applied for a provisional driving license yet? If so, how long did it take to arrive? And where did you sign up for your driving lessons? Not having a car or access to a car is the biggest difficulty for me living here...I'd even rate that higher than tax info or access to medical care. I know that I technically can drive on my US license for a year, but I've heard all kinds of stories about how long it takes to get driving and theory test appointments. Plus, who knows if I'll pass the first time...

Provisional driving license takes a few weeks. You can pay for it online and actually apply online, but you'd still have to post either your BRP or your passport to them. If you want to use your married named you would also have to send your marriage certificate.

Test times vary depending on location and you can't book the practical fest without a pass number for your theory test.

You can take driving lessons without your UK provisional license for that 1 year from your entrance date. So of you wanted to start immediately you can. You'll want to start making calls for lessons as most instructors have a waiting list in the summer.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.
