A good book to get is the Sears' Baby Sleep Book.  They are strong co-sleeping advocates but not in a pushy way, and offer help for all parents no matter what "sleep method" they choose-lots of practical advice!

Love Dr. Sears!  While we didn't co-sleep (I was too paranoid and never got any sleep) I am a big believer in everything else he recommends.  We used to joke that we did semi-attachment parenting.  ;)

In terms of whether or not to co-sleep... you really won't know what works for you until the baby comes.  I was all for it, but it just wasn't something I could do and retain my sanity.  :-\\\\

And of course, I agree with everyone that it's what's best for you and your family.  That's what this is all about, right?  Don't let anyone, no matter who, tell you that something is wrong if it works for you and you're all happy with it!

This is the first Sears book I read and I really enjoyed it!

Amen to that!  I so agree!!!  I am tired of people telling me how to do something and the way I think is wrong.  Then don't do it I say and let me get on with my life I never tell you how to live yours.  (So glad I can vent here!)

Will look for the Sears book, thanks for that!

Ditto that!  Before the baby arrived, we both said that we absolutely would not let the baby into our bed, as we thought it sounded dangerous and figured we'd never get any sleep.  We actually got more sleep, though, because I could doze while Ellen was nursing, and then we didn't have to wake ourselves up to put her back in the bassinett.

A friend of mine in NY had an attachment that hooked on the bed where the baby slept.  I'll have to ask her how that worked.

My friend's in the US have something very similar, it actually reminds me of a large shoe-box that the baby sleeps in, in the middle of their queen size bed. My friend was bedridden for 7 mths of this pregnancy to keep it viable and then he had open heart surgery at 1 week old, there is NO WAY IN HELL she is sleeping apart from this baby yet - and so I think everyone has their own (and they're valid, no matter what) reasons for co-sleeping or not.

Anyway, Stacey, this box is very cool and is available from all the baby stores here, plus Target etc and is essentially a covered baby sized (shoe box) with one end open for squirming legs and he is very comfortable in there and they know they can't roll over onto him.

Apparently studies are showing that babies who sleep in the same room as their parents for the first year are less likely to die of SIDS.

i remember when i was pregnant reading an article in one of my pregnancy magazines about this....  if i find it, i'll let you know, as i'm due to be going thru them for any toddler articles here soon...

Calvin slept in his room (in a moses basket from birth) (though for the first 4 months, i was up several times a night for feeds.. and we used a monitor as well...) we've only co-slept with him once and that was about 6 weeks ago when he was up in the night with bad teething pains and the only thing that was soothing him was being cuddled with us, and he fell asleep on the bed, and we didnt have the heart to move him!)
