I'm from WI with parents from IA, and we called it the heel.
On s'envolera du même quai
Les yeux dans les mêmes reflets,
Pour cette vie et celle d'après
Tu seras mon unique projet.

Je t'aimais, je t'aime, et je t'aimerai.

Perhaps it is a German thing?

I've heard both heel and crust. I *think* we called it a heel in SW PA?

I'm almost sure my grandfather (from Phila) called it 'the heel'.  It was his favorite bit of the loaf--especially rye bread.

Same here (socal also!)... but in the west of Scotland I've heard it called 'ender bit', and 'doorstop'.

Yes! I always heard it referred to as the ender in Glasgow. I think growing up I always just called it the end, but I'd heard it called the heel.

Kansas - we called it the heel. Maybe it's an American thing?  :)

At some point, DH and I started calling it 'the butt' - probably because we are juvenile and prurient.

So Calif, and today is the first that I've heard of it called the heel.  Mom was from Wisconsin and she always called it the "end piece".  If we didn't eat it, we used it as an excuse to feed the birds.  :)

I'm originally from IL, and we always called the end of the bread the heel.
