Sorry I'm late to join in on this thread, but I'm an absolute podcast addict. I hope I don't derail any ongoing conversations.

S-Town is so good. I was listening to it in the car on a business trip with a colleague after she fell asleep. When she woke up she asked me wtf I was listening to, but I couldn't properly explain what it was "about" lol. That was at like episode 3/4 (multiple hours into the show).

If you like S-Town, you should check out This American Life. That show has been around for a really long time and their staff produced both S-Town and Serial. If you really want to nerd out, there is a podcast by AV Club  (sister site of the Onion) where they analyse each episode of Serial and S-Town. It's called The Serial Serial.

Also Radiolab is a favorite of mine. They have a spin off about the Supreme Court called More Perfect.

There was a new one by NPR recently called Rough Translation which looks how things being discussed in America are happening in other countries.

WTF with Marc Maron is also great - he's an amazing interviewer and has had really huge guests on his show, including Obama as sitting president.

I could go on for a long time but I'll spare you :D

Absolutely never too late to join in :)

I've heard of This American Life because of Serial/S-Town and Beautiful-Anonymous (as the host has appeared on This American Life) but I never actually listened to it because when I looked at the description, it just described it as a weekly public radio show and I know it has guests on it but it was almost too broad for me to start listening to. I know I'll eventually check it out but the reason I listened to Serial/S-Town, for example, is because I liked the specific topic they discussed on those but with This American life, it seems like it could be talking about annnyythinggg. I know it's quality as a lot of people talk about it, but it's difficult for me to dive into because I've got SO many podcasts on my queue about specific things that I want to get through those first.

I have heard of AV Club, I've NOT heard about their "Serial" podcast so I will DEFINITELY need to check that out.

I've got Marc Maron's podcast in my queue but I'd not heard of Rough Translation before, but it sounds very interesting so I may need to add that one too :)

Haha that's like 100% exactly what I thought when I discovered it. I found out about it through Serial as well. When I subscribed and started reading the names/descriptions of episodes, I thought 'that topic doesn't really interest me' for almost every one. Months later when I finally just listened to a couple, I realized that the topic of the day doesn't really  matter at all. It's just really great storytelling. The episodes are broken down into different "acts" (stories) that all have some loose common link (the theme of the episode). I find Serial and especially S-Town are like episodes of TAL that got turned into a whole season instead of an hour long episode. It's definitely my favorite podcast if you can't tell  ;D

I've never heard of Beautiful Anonymous. What's that about?

Hmmm I may need to just give it a go then.

Beautiful anonymous is “Beautiful Stories from Anonymous Strangers” and it’s “hosted” by stand-up comedian Chris Gethard. He basically takes calls from people that call in to chat to him. He can’t hang up until they reach an hour and the caller can hang up whenever and talk about pretty much whatever they want for up to that hour. Only rule is that they can’t give any information that could identify them (I’m like 20 episodes or so in and the rules have been broken maybe 2 times? Both times I think it was worth is as a personal opinion but one guy called in and said “hi I’m —” right off the bat once and got hung up on - if that makes sense?). The conversations can take some different twists and turns. I’m a pretty big fan but I think some people get bored after a while.

Welcome omglolmax, it's always nice to hear from someone else.

I've always liked this American life, but I think it's a gray area Wether it's a radio show on NPR or a podcast.  I like the production values and storytelling for sure.

Have you tried any of the podcasts from Gimlet, guys who used to work for This American Life?  Reply All and Start Up are classics from them.

If you haven't yet, you've got to try Ear Hustle, about life in San Quentin prison.  There's a great episode about all these elaborate racial rules they have, like a white guy can't give a package of open food to a Hispanic guy.  It all sounds crazy at first, but the reasons behind it all are fascinating.

Feel like we really should be refreshing this thread!

What podcast are you all listening to lately??

Listening to Somebody Knows Something - S2 as I type this. Beautiful Anonymous is also still in my weekly rotation and I put on Sleep With Me: The Podcast every night at bedtime. Will hold off on listing any more I've got on the go to see if anybody else wants to revive this thread or if it's only me still podcasting my heart out LOL

I'm still listening to tons of podcasts.  My new fave is deep state radio, a political analysis show with law professors.  Very critical of Trump.

Also a lot of Real Time with Bill Maher, the hbo talk show.

Also the butterfly effect with Ron Johnson, about the invention of Pornhub and it's effect on the establishment porn industry.

Bill Maher

There is German word, Backpfeifengesicht, which translates to "a face that is begging to be punched".

I've got that one in my queue! Just not had a chance to start it yet. Been in my queue for far too long so probably about time that I start it lol

I can say that - personally - there have been multiple occasions where I could've used this word had I known it at the time.

You are correct there.  It's kind of a fun challenge to listen to something that you mostly agree with, but every once in a while he says something completely ignorant.

Finally started listening to the Butterfly Effect thanks to a nudge from you, Jimbo. Made it halfway through episode 3 so far. Only criticism is that the hosts voice just doesn't fit something that was made in 2017 LOL I don;t know if that makes sense or not.

Jon  does have a distinctive voice, but I really like his style.  I love the way he says "Porn people".

I was at a school function once and started talking to a lady who was an expert on psychopaths, and mentioned Jon's new book  "The Psycopath Test" .  She told me that she was actually named and interviewed in the book, and that she wasn't happy with how what she said had been edited and/or put in the wrong context to change the meaning.  She had written some emails to complain but didn't get anywhere.  Bit of a shame really becuase I had always thought he was above board.

hahah I was listening to it in the bedroom and my husband was working on our en suite so he was listening to it too and we both couldn't stop laughing at the "Porn people". Loved it. He definitely has a distinct voice (all I can picture is the comedian Joe Lycett) and his voice doesn't bother me, it just doesn't fit this type of podcast in my mind so was a bit jarring.....or any podcast made in the last 15+ years! To me, he sounds like some 70's journalist hah
