DH has changed his tune about making a shipment.  Now its: you'll have to get rid of that, it won't fit in a suitcase, you can buy new ones back in the UK.

Well no, I can't buy new of everything.  And if I did he'd be moaning about the cost.  Besides, sometimes you want some of those things you accumulated over the years.  Yes, I could buy new sets of towels from John Lewis but I have stacks of quite new ones in the US that were probably half the cost and maybe even better quality.

lol BD, you said it! I had this conversation with my MIL the other day.  She said, 'Well why don't you just come now? We can charge the tickets, and I'll help you pay them off.' And I asked her if she was going to replace my family heirloom furniture, and 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets, and antique china that I love, and our expensive bikes, and all the kids' books? We paid nothing or next to nothing most of these things, but they are high quality, and it would cost just as much if not more to replace the bare minimum of our things with crappy versions of them. Maybe she can sleep on itchy sheets and a crappy mattress, but I refuse!  Also, just like you said, sometimes you want your things.

Now just a minute Wren, aren't you supposed to be de-cluttering? A good de-cluttering has to hurt!

Define "clutter".   :P  I don't think sheets and towels count as clutter.

Boston, true, true...

I went through an ascetic period - I am still grappling with it. I envisioned a room with a laptop, a small pot/burner to cook beans and rice, and a simple mat to sleep on. Sort of like old-style Japanese architecture, where there is just a very well crafted room with not a lot in it.

I read this quote by that whacked-out, aged fashion designer (Lagerfield?) where he said that he just got completely fed up with food. Not the nutrients or whatever, but just the act of always eating stuff and mucking about with it and feeling bloated and the whole lower digestive process. So he gets his man servant to bring him just a bowl of clear broth once a day and some sort of simple protein bar or something. I think during the interview he yelled at his man servant, "Damn you Gabriel, yoghurt on Wednesdays! Yoghurt!!"

Up early....vigorous work out....small meals throughout the day. Judo in the evenings - along with language studies. I got a copy of Ulysses (oddly enough I gave up on it almost immediately - there is no point in Ulysses).

Some things have stuck....some haven't. I just ate a pack of hotdogs for instance.

But yes sheets and towels.

Hmmmm.

Your MIL sounds like a nice lady.  People usually don't offer to cough up their cash unless they are really interested in helping you out.

Yeah, she rocks! And totally takes my side on most things.  But she just doesn't get it costs more than plane tickets, and she can't fathom how much it will be to transport the pets.

Looks like I'll be bringing over some bags :)

My fiance and I were discussing this today. I am dreading this process. I am already going through my books and winnowing down which is making me so sad! Luckily, all of my CDs are ripped, so I just have to get rid of them.

I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of things like beds when we still need to sleep on them!

We will be able to check 6 suitcases free of charge when we fly, so I'm trying to figure out the best use of the 300 pounds. Mostly clothes, but I'm thinking a bag of toys for the boys and maybe some linens too? And our favorite foods to tide us over? And toiletries and stuff?

Then I have a quote from upakweship, so I am shipping 20 of the 18 gal rubbermaid bins over so I have to cram all of my earthly possessions into those! Ugh.

Hey!
I'm going through the exact same thing you are!  :o

How are you finding the process and cost of "upakweship"?
Can you tell me a little more about the process you've experienced? I have a post in the Moving Shipping thread if you could reply there:

Thanks!

Here's some small things I keep picking up whenever I'm in the US:

Hefty 2.5 gal. zip bags (good for storing sweaters and other woolies)
Colibri cedarwood sachets (seen these at Lakeland but prob. cheaper from US)
CVS spray hand disinfectant (small enough to go in a pocket)
Advil
Citracal (calcium citrate)
Neo to Go (small Neosporin)
Tide travel sink packs (for hand laundry on holiday)
Tide to Go stain treatment
100 calorie packs of almonds
Endangered Species dark chocolate (!)

Also thinking about for next time:
ACE bandage
"Ice" pack to keep in the fridge so I don't have to use the frozen peas
Xlear sinus nasal spray (need this to prevent ear ache on flights)
plastic hangers with clips (Target has these usually but I have tons back at the ranch)
pillow protectors -- just the plain zipped cases
file folders, preferably colored ones (I don't get on with "wallets" for filing papers!)

I LOVE Candy Corn and just finished the one bag I brought over last Tuesday  :\\\'( :\\\'( :\\\'( I knew I should have brought more over  >:( I know it is pure, plastic, bright orange sugar, but it is sooooooo good and I am pretty sure it must be laced with crack as I want more and more and more when I eat it!  ;D

What I either make sure to bring over after a trip home to stock up, or have brought over already as I cannot find it here or if I have it is hugely expensive or just not the same as I am used to (in my opinion  ::)) off the top of my head is ...

Gift boxes
Gift bags
Ribbon
Scotch Tape
Packing Tape
Zip Loc bags
Make up/Cosmetics (Bare Minerals )
Old Bay/BBQ/Taco seasonings
Sudafed (12 hour)
Halloween/Thanksgiving decorations
(I never really decorated too very much for either day in the USA, but here, I feel the need to do so  ;))
Flea & tick drops for dog & cat

I can live without candy corn, thank you very much, but used to bring it over for our daughter.
