I'm in Leeds but i'm moving my ass to TX
« on: June 25, 2003, 06:30:18 PM »
Well i've been in Leeds recently and i'm leaving to go to TX in a few weeks.  I met Ashley by accident today who's also an Americana.  I'm from Brooklyn though.  I also met another American in Quincy's Bar & Grill in Warner Village (he's the Bartender) and another one yesterday in a Subway's subway shop.  Damn Yanks!  EVERYWHERE!!

Yeah wife's British.  None of these statements are full sentences are they?  Hmm..and to think I took English as a minor in college.  Go figure!!

Wish me luck and i'll definately miss England!  But I need friends...

Welcome to the Boards!

What part of Texas are you headed to? I've spent some fun times in Dallas and I hear San Antonio is fabulous too. Several of my good friends are from Texas, I'm sure you will have no problems getting hooked up again. Plus you will be moving to the land of championship NBA basketball  ;D

First thing i'm gonna do is go to a Sonic and have a burger, then i'll be off to Taco Bell (which i'm sure i wont revisit afterwards for many months).  Then I'm gonna find an A&W (we dont have them in the East coast).  I wish I can go to Nathans but dont think there are any in TX.  But thank GOD there's Dunkin Donuts.  Then I'm going to Sears and JC Penny for some hardware shopping.  I think i'm gonna fall on my knees and cry in delight!!

LOL

Man, when I said you should come check out the forum, I didn't mean an hour later!

Seriously though, this is a great board and everyone here knows exactly what you're talking about. Those things we talked about at lunch.... we've talked about it here!

Sorry to miss the discussion.  I don't check this site very often.  I'm in San Antonio -- we sure could use some foreigners around here.  Dallas is ok, But S.A. has quite a bit more going for it.  The only think I miss is Edradour Scotch -- can't find it anywhere.

Cheers.

Welcome merouby :)

Odd how you happened to meet Ashley, but cool too.  Weird how things work.

How long have you been in the UK and what makes you want to move to Texas?

I'm still in the USA, but am right there with you on the Sonic thing...love them!  Cherry Limeades and all. :)

Thanks guys for the welcome...a bit too late though for me as i'll be leaving shortly, but let me say it was very nice eating lunch with an American.  I almost forgot what it's like  ;)  Tomorrow is my last day at work as well.  Wish I could do it again :(  Ah well, soon i'll be up to my eyeballs with other Americans.

I had a very hard transition coping to England, esp in the people dept.  I'm sure many of you can relate.  After a while you become more and more 'English' and then you start to become more paletable to the natives and start making friends (Better learn to drink alcohol!).  Nevertheless, you become the American 'comedy relief sidekick' at work - almost with a cartoon-like quality.

I have spend over 3 years here and I can honestly say I haven't made one friend here.  Compare to the dozens of new friends I made in NYC about a year ago when i spent a few months there made it clear Britian wasn't clearly suitable for my social appetite.

Wife (British) chose Texas as a 'compromise' when she realized i wasnt happy here in Britian, but what really helped is two of her best friends emigrated to Dallas/Ft Worth.  The schools seem great (I have two youngin's) and the houses are dirt cheap.  I'm not a lover of Dallas as its too hot and too boring IMO and if I had to choose TX I would probably choose San Antonio.   However, i'm sick of travelling back and forth and have become determined to make TX my home.  ;)  Always loved the Lone Star state anyway, and i always felt like a Southerner at heart (yes I'm an old Dukes of Hazzard fan)

I know i'm gonna miss England something awful, but i'll be always visiting my inlaws here.

Just as a FYI, this ISNT the first time I lived in Europe.  I lived 7 years in Vienna, Austria during my 80s teenage years as my dad worked for the UN.  I went to an American high school there so i'm kinda somewhat "used" to living abroad.  Life is not without a sense of irony.

Hello Merouby,

Welcome to the boards.  Good luck on the new chapter of your life in Dallas.  I actually love the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex.  There is a lot to offer there.  If you are a sports guy they have baseball, basketball, football, and Hockey.  Culturally Dallas does have a lot going for it as any large city does.  Plus it has two main airports and lots of cool shopping areas.  Not to mention most Texans are very friendly.  You should have no problems making friends.

I have to say your post sadened me as well.  Sorry you have been having dificulties living here.  I have not lived here for a year yet and so desparatly want to go home.  Last night my husband and I were talking about the differences between UK people and USA people and I just said there is no way I could be friends with any UK woman I have met so far and roled over and pretended I went to sleep.  I like you have lived over seas and had no problems living in that country but seem to not fit in here.   :(  I cannot imagine living here for three years under these conditions.  I am trying so I hope it does improve.

Sorry not to be a wet blanket...congradulations on the move.  I wish you all the best.

Cheers,

Good luck on your move. I am sad to hear your experience was not very great in the UK. Hopefully, Texas will make you very happy.

Thanks...F train here! (18th Ave)

MoiNovelle: Thanks.  If it helps you're not alone.  Every American I speak to either "adopt" their English spouses friends or get their own through working here.  But either way, be prepared for a long time of wait until the natives adopt you fully as one of their friends.  Dont rely on your sense of humor...it doesnt really work here - they'll laugh more at you as that "odd loud American".  Instead adopt British phrases, mannerisms and drinking habits and soon enough you'll have some buds.  However, those "buds" are just that - buds.  They'll need a few months or even years before they become what you may call friend material.  And who wants a friend who you always have to tip-e-toe around??  Unless you try blend into being a "Brit with an American accent".  So I say bring on America.  I aint gonna do that!

That's why many Americans in London (not tourists) I met on the Tube alienate normal (read loud) Americans.  They've already adopted the "British" traits and now see you as the brash outcast.  Once I struck a convo with an attractive young American on the Tube that was visiting England who exlaimed "These English people aren't friendly and aren't approachable - how the hell i'm i expected to make friends here??"  When I told her that they reserved and that she should lower her voice she was like "I dont care if they hear me - they know what they're like"  She told me England was the first time she wasn't hit on by guys at a bar.  "What's wrong with these guys?"  she said.  I couldnt help but laugh...and so did a few commuters..but i understood her 180%.

I dont get along as who I am here - An outspoken New Yorker living in Britian.  That's why I'm on the next plane out.  :-/

Outspoken, loud, New Yorker...you would have made a great contribution to this board. Your gain in moving is our loss; we would have laughed at your jokes.  ;D
