Local farmers, farm shops and pick your own food finds
« on: November 18, 2004, 02:41:51 PM »
One of the brilliant things about living in the UK and especially in the South West is that there is a dedication to keeping the local farm alive.  Moreover, many of these local farms go as far as to go organic and thus contribute to sustainable agriculture and to keeping our environment a nice place to be.

I am also surprised at how affordable some of these products are as well as the quality that you get.  Granted it means sometimes having to be creative and cooking with new vegtables and cuts of meat.  The flavor of the food is the true sell for me.  The cauliflower (which comes in green, white and even purple varieties) is so pure and needs nothing to it to be tasty.  Carrots that are so sweet they don't even need ranch dressing, potatoes that taste like potatoes and tomatoes that taste of the sun (in the summer of course).

Anyways... my whole point with this is to create a list of local suppliers of good or "slow food" so that people can find them local to them.  So please put a link (if they have a website), address or phone number and what you like about them.  It's kind of like a Rick Stein's good food guide on UKY.  ;D

I have to put a plug in for www.rodandbens.com who won the best egg in the UK category.  They have a box scheme that covers Exeter and Exmouth.  I go to school with Ben's wife.  :)

I get a bi-weekly veg box from http://www.riverford.co.uk/en/ and they work with local producers to deliver UK wide.  Never had a disappointing box!

I also do a monthly meat box from http://www.wellhungmeat.com/ Their pork is award winning and I can't think of anything bad to say about the meat we have had.  They also do cottage lets on their property.

Well those are my contributions.  Feel free to add little local shops as well!

I so agree peeps!!!  I try and get to the monthly farmers market, as well as the smaller one we have every Friday and Sat.  I also go to fruit and veg day (Thursday's) every week at the Uni I work at.  So nice to have such fresh produce, cheese and meats!!!

I totally agree about the fresh food and using local. I love going to the greengrocer and the butcher, getting milk and eggs delivered. The food is topnotch, fresh and I just feel so much healthier. I even like growing herbs in the kitchen window.

We're in farm country; might as well take full advantage!

Pam, no time at the mo' but I have lots of listings for markets and stuff. Will look it all up tomorrow.

BTW though, some of the markets you go to are not any more fresh or local than what's at your supermarket. I'll see if I can find more info on this as well but one of the best ways to know... is to ask!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

When we first moved to Islington we went to the local Farmers market and it was very disappointing. Obviously they come from miles away because there are no farms in London and I think their prices had been adjusted accordingly because everything was VERY EXPENSIVE. I bought some yummy looking bread that was nice but no better than anything I could have got at a local bakery or even in Sainsbury's or Waitrose. I also bought some fancy cheeses which were nice but again not really worth the inflated prices. It's a shame because I would much rather buy my fresh produce that way.

I honestly have not been to the farmer's market... I did go to the local food festival... but I was more referring to places people had been and had good luck and finds with.  Sainsbury's does have a great organic selection though.

Waitrose also carries a lot of locally sourced foods.

A good spice place in London is:

The Spice Shop
1 Blenheim Crescent
London W11 2EE

http://www.thespiceshop.co.uk/index.htm

They do all their own blends and mixtures fresh they have tons of the Mexican chilis too!

Just the place to go if you are missing great chili powder mix or just need that Berbere Ethiopian Wat seasoning! ;)

www.stokesplc.com, while they aren't organic, they do try to use local producers whenever possible.  another good organization is FairTrade, good selection of coffee, tea and chocolate.  The village church has an outlet that sells Fairtraded items, as well as the local Co-op.

Blackheath SE3 has a small farmers market on sundays. They have a limited selection of stuff. The produce comes from farms in Kent.
But the best market has to be Borough Market near London bridge.
I go almost every week. It can get very busy on Saturdays. Its a great place for lunch.

we have been using a local farm for our meats since last year...  they are great and the meats are excellent as well as affordable...  I call in my order once a month and the farmer delivers to the house within a few days...  Just spoke to her the other day about thanksgiving dinner...  she thought I was ordering fresh turkey for christmas...when I told her it was for next weekend an american thanksgiving...she told me she had to get off the phone...when I asked her why, she said she had to go and shoot our dinner for next week...  awwwwe!

Booths supermarkets, which I think are mainly in the north west, although there is one in Ilkley, won the Good Food programme award last for stocking the highest percentage of regional products. See: http://www.booths-supermarkets.co.uk/
