Ok, the people I'm living with are really nice and have gone out of their way to make me feel at home here. BUT they don't cook. Everything come out of the freezer, then goes into the microwave or oven. I am so sick of frozen food. It's disgusting. I cook on weekend for everyone else (they think I'm just being really nice  ;D ). But I don't get home until after 6:30 on weekdays.

I'm use to eated fresh food---my family in America grows all thier own fruit/veg, and what we can grow we buy at the farmer's market. I didn't even realize fruit salad can come out of a tin can until I moved here.

We had chicken burgers and microwave chips last night for supper.

One plus: I've lost 20 pounds in four months, and I haven't dieted at all.

Not all curries are fattening. Even homemade ones don't need to be creamy at all. Last year I spent two weeks on vacation in Mauritius, staying with family and eating nothing but Indian foods. Curries twice a day! And I actually lost weight! Yup, on vacation. I lost weight! Only 4 lbs, but still! The curries my relatives make don't usually include any cream at all. They're tomato based and are really delicious. You just have to remember not to overdo it on the rice! Also, they tend not to eat fattening desserts -- just fruit for after. That makes a big difference as well.

Yeah - it's actually not the curries that are fattening - he never uses the creamy sauces to cook with (no coconut milk!)...it's more the traditional sausages, pizza with meat, red meat stuff that's doing it!  I never ate sausages or bacon or very much meat until I moved here.  Guess I'll have to do the cooking, remind him that HE wants to lose some weight so we'll have to do more healthy cooking, etc.  I know he loves to cook...so perhaps it will be a good challenge for him!

Angie - have you thought about cooking a bunch on the weekends and then putting it in the freezer?  It won't be totally fresh, but the quality will be better as you'll be putting in the ingredients!

Wagamama is my favourite restaurant! The one in Leicester Square is particularly good....I love Yaki Udon!

Oh -  a friend of ours does fat-free curries (no added fat) by starting with a base of onions that she slowly sweats down in the skillet (as the sauce base) and goes from there.  She puts trimmed meat into it at some point & spices, etc but no oil.  She also makes her own chapatis.

Angie -- Along with what onetiger suggested...I like making up large batches of things like spaghetti sauce & chili, etc & freezing into portions for future meals.  Also things like cooking a large chicken & having all those leftovers plus chicken soup or casserole & so forth.  It's hard to cook when you get home late from work like that, but I've found it doesn't take much time to grill a piece of salmon or chicken, and some veggies, or have a salad, etc.  Perhaps you could start your own campaign there to inspire the family to eat healthier? :)

The Wagamama in Camden is great - usually a lot less crowded feeling than the one in Leicester Square.

It does! I swear it does - dude. ;)

A gal I used to work with in FL would bring it for lunch & try to tempt all the rest of us into eating it...she usually just ended grossing everyone out. :P

No, from NOT eating them! They're not even real burgers---they come pre-made from ASDA, bun and ketchup and all!

Have you thought about cooking a bunch on the weekends and then putting it in the freezer? It won't be totally fresh, but the quality will be better as you'll be putting in the ingredients!

I did do that for a while, but I kind of insulted them by not eating the food they fix. So now I just pick around at whatever they give me, then get cereal or something later at night.
