My mock test today,,
« on: April 21, 2005, 09:30:52 PM »
Well,, it was interesting,,lol.  The guy who acted as the examiner, said that I had fantastic control of the car, my observations were perfect, he felt safe at all times, my manuvers were fine, cept that I did mess up the reverse park, I bumped the curb (crap).  He said that once I should have sped up a bit, after turning left at a red light,, but I wasn't sure if the speed limit was 40 after the light, or was 30, so I kept it under 30 until I saw a sign telling me it was 40. He said I should have gone up to 40 right after the light.  Ahh well,, I drove the same as if I were driving alone.  Also, he said I needed to check my mirrors more,, even tho I felt I was checking them constantly. (Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors,,,etc)  Also, he said that I didn't check the mirror when I changed speed at one point,, but I am positive I did,, but if he were the real examiner, I would have failed regardless,,lol.  My instructer, Jane, says that this guy tends to exaggerate the 'mirrors' thing to stress it,, and that I probably did fine. UGH, ugh, ugh,,,lol

just bring on May 12th, and let's get this over with.  :-\\\\

It sounds like you did really well!! The mirrors thing will get you every time. Ugh. And as for the not speeding up enough after turning, I used to do that all the time! Even now after having my UK license for 6 months, I still get confused about speed limits not always being marked -- they're the same as they were on the previous road unless it specifies otherwise. You'll be fine on May 12th, though, I'm sure of it. Didn't it help so much having a mock test, no matter how nervous you were? And if you're like me, now that you've gone through the mock test, you won't be as freaked out on the big day as you would have been if you didn't know what to expect. Well done!

That's a great idea to have a mock test! Wish I had one. (Oh yeah, I did...it was called "when I took the test the first time and failed")

One thing about the mirrors....you are SO used to doing it all the time that peeking up at them becomes so seamless that the examiner isn't even aware you're doing it. Adjust the mirror just a little askew so you actually have to lift your head just a smidgeon to get the view. She/He'll see your body move, and there will be no doubt that you looked.

The other hint I was given was more a mental image. Pretend your passenger has a huge bowl of water on his/her lap, and the object is not to let any of that water spill.

Thanks for the hints...I'll try that on my mock test.  Not sure when I'll get it in though...and my test is coming up fast!  Oy!

Yeah, I should have adjusted the mirror,, hubby was telling me when he took his test, that his instructer told him to do that as well.   Overall, the guy seemed to think I will do ok,, but it is his job to nitpick, so I will tweak what I need to tweak.  I just want it over, lol.

Belinda, yeah, I think it does help to do a mock test,, and LOL@ Lisa,, I just hope my 'next' test doesn't turn into a mock one as well LOL.

Onetiger,, it's all the little nitpicky things that make you get nervous,, I plan to stock up on bananas, and Rescue Remedy,,lol.  Do you have a test date yet?

LOL, yours is the day before mine??  i want you to report how easy it actually was, (lie to me if you have to,,LOL).  The mock is just to point out anything you may  need to change before the test, don't let it make you nervous :)  Sounds like you have a handle on it from what your instructor said tho, so I don't think you should be nervous.  I have so many years of bad habits I am having to break, and that's tough, lol.

Good luck you guys!  I have never driven, and the thought of it here is bad enough!  (Liane at least you have driven in MA!!!  If you can drive there you can drive anywhere :P)

Thanks Stacey!  Yeah, it's the breaking of 20 years of American habit that is driving me nuts.  But I don't have an expectation of passing so if I fail it won't be a big deal - I'll go in as relaxed as possible.  If I fail it will give me more time to practice - I don't work for 1/2 of June and all of July so I'll have the time to borrow bf's car!

I drove us from home, over to Poole the other day, to pick something up for hubby,, and it felt so nice :) I don't know if I could find the way on my own, but it felt natural to be driving again.  The only problem, is when I am driving with hubby,, I don't know if I am reverting to any of my bad habits, as his are much worse than mine,,lol.

tebs, do you have a TomTomGo? This has given me the confidence to go more and more places on my own. (And it's really cool/fun, too!)

I wish I had access to a vehicle for practice.  I'm worried that without practicing a bunch before my test I'm going to flail!  But if I do...will just have to be okay with it...and then see if I can get insured on my bf's car before the next test!
