Famous Landmarks
« on: April 28, 2005, 09:59:35 AM »
What famous landmarks would you say would let you recognise a particular British city?   The Houses of Parliament or Tower Bridge for London, the castle for Edinburgh, perhaps "The Angel of the North".   The conversation came up last night over dinner in Peterborough where I was looking for (and failed to find) a good "where am I this week" quiz picture.

Does YOUR town or city (UK or USA) have a worldwide recognised landmark?  Care to follow me up with a picture?

Oh - here's what I came up with in Peterborough.  Nice but just not recognisable!

I agree about Stonehenge - that's another of those classics.  Salisbury Catherdral ... not quite so sure but I know very well the "classic" view over the watermeadows.

Posting images here ... I've put mine on my own web server and then used an img tag to put them here ... I wrote

[i m g ] h t t p : / / w w w . w e l l h o . n e t / p i x / o r t o n m e r e . j p g [ / i m g ]

(except without the spaces) into my post.  There's plenty of free web space available out there and I know that images can be posted here - I could need to be corrected on that but I think that's one of the "extras" for charter members.

I LOVE the top picture -- the water is so still and you can see the reflections.  Very nice!

For Newcastle, it'd have to be the Millenium bridge;

For Jacksonville, NC, my hometown, I'd say either the sign at the main gate of Camp Lejeune:

or the beach!

I guess Millennium Stadium in Cardiff is my closest well-known landmark -- even though it's about 2 hours away from me:

The one I'd pick is this:

But this is probably the more recognizable one:

There are many landmarks in downtown Chicago.

But, as I'm out in the suburbs, Cermak Plaza is a bit closer.  Does anybody recognize this one?

From where I'm from, the Nicholson Viaduct.  :) I chose this only because I couldn't find a picture of the blinking red light at Elk Lake Four Corners. ;)

From my hometown we have bridges: Maidenhead Bridge & the Brunel Bridge, also the famous Skindles scene of many a royal scandal, also home to some underage drinkers in the 1980s, ahem.

Coventry where I live is the home of Lady Godiva ... We have a lovely statue in the City Centre

My hometown is Chicago..Lots of landmarks there. Here is the Sears Tower...one of the largest (and ugliest) buildings in the world.
