Puppies & Kitties

How many of you have adopted a dog or cat when you moved to the UK?

Where did you get your pet?

Do they have animal shelters that you can adopt from like in the US?

DH and I adopted a 2-year old greyhound when we bought our 1st house 7 years ago.
We got him from Battersea Dogs Home, which is probably the largest and most well-known animal shelter.

I've adopted 2 of my cats from the Cat Protection League- the second from the local vet, who is a member of the CPL. In this area, they don't have an actual shelter- the cats are housed in people's homes.

We adopted our dog, Caz, from a shelter (Max the mouse came from a friend).  Actually, I should say that Caz adopted us, it was love at first sight!

My husband had one cat, a Persian, who had been a stray found wondering around in the Borders.  'Smokey' quickly became my cat.  We adopted 'Pepsi' a 2-year-old, female black and white (I still call her a 'tuxedo' cat) from Lothian Cat & Dog Home - a rescue shelter 3 years ago.  She is deffo DH's cat.

We adopted a two year old German Shep. from the National Canine Defense. She was lovely and sweet but she just couldn't get used to the small house and all the kids so she had to be re-homed.  :\\\'(

Joshua,

There are also many breed rescue societies that need to re-home dogs, usually through no fault of their own, so if you had a particular breed in mind that would be a good place to start.  Will include cat links too.

I am a vet nurse student and adopted both my cats, Fletcher and Pip (at different times) from the Cats Protection League.

I wouldn't trade them for the world.  :)  Pip likes to "greet" anyone whos knocks on the door, or try to run pass them that is.  ;D

Fletcher is very laid back and thinks he is "the man".

Anyone know of sheltie breeders within the UK?  We currently have a sheltie but are not sure about him making the trip with us.

Ask around here:
http://www.champdogs.co.uk/

Tends to have a good mix of serious breeders and people that take dog breeding seriously - (ie: not for profit)

*NB* I cannot personally recommend any of the breeders, I just think it might be a good place to start. There are breeders, judges etc on this site.

I adopted both of my dogs from the county shelter in CA.  They were/are the most loving, loyal, awesome dogs.  I would rescue again in a heartbeat.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Great minds think alike, I was going to post these;  Although if the poster is only willing to consider raising a new puppy from known stock, the least I can do is direct them to somewhere where responsible breeders congregate.  Shelties do suffer from a few well known health problems and in some cases I can understand the need to purchase a puppy.

However......

I added Scotland as a lot of people seem to be moving to Scotland.
