there's a class action suit about the batteries in the older ipods. They've fixed that by now. I got something in the mail about it and woudl have gotten a $50 credit, but to me, it wasn't worth finding my credit card statement when I had bought it so long ago.

My husband got one of those, too.  I wonder if he bothered to send it back or not...?

I'd like to have a mini disc for recording concerts - a friend of mine does great bootlegs with his. But I want an Ipod to avoid having to carry discs around. I want something that fits in my handbag and doesn't have anything to fumble with.... I actually LOVE my MP3 player - it just doesn't hold enough music....

Nothing extra to carry - just leave the mini disc in the MD player.  I only have one disc and, like I said before, I have 740 tracks on it and loads of room left.  :)

Yeah, I hear ya.... They do seem cool. But I'm being seduced by the idea of 15,000 tracks plus album art.  ;)

Yes I can see the appeal, but in reality - who really owns 15,000 tracks?  I put every track on there that I own, plus loads of downloads and it's still only 740 tracks.  And when would you *look* at the album art?  Plus I have a handy digital quality sound recorder with me where ever I go....

No I don't work for the MD manufacturers!  ;D

My husband is INSANE about having the album art on everything.  He's obsessed, I tells ya!  He's spent hours online trying to dig up artwork for albums that aren't even available anymore.  ::)

Yeah, I'm afraid I'm a music junkie. I worked for record labels for many years. I've got well in excess of 900 albums and probably a good 100 singles with b-sides plus all of the bootleg concerts I've downloaded and burned to CD over the years. I could EASILY come up with 10,000 tracks.

And I'm a purist about artwork. It's why I can't really get behind downloading albums - I need to own it - to read the album notes, to look at the pictures.... It's a sickness. But it's who I am.  ;D

I completely understand, Anne!  While we don't have quite the collection you do, we're easily at 800+ CDs and close to 300 albums (vinyl).  Not including the cassettes and various 45s we've got stuck in closets, of course.

Over the past few years as money has gotten tighter (since I started the full-time mom thing), I've had to let go of my love of wandering through music stores and buying new stuff.  It's been hard, but I'd rather buy a song here or there online than have to go completely without!  And if I really want to take a look at the insert, I can always get it from the library.

It's not a sickness.... it's a healthy obsession!  ;)

to those who own ipods, i've read some reviews that the battery life isn't that good...

thoughts on this?

The earlier older Ipods have less battery life than the newer ones.  This was one of the main complaints about ipods, so the makers improved the batteries over the years.  Hence why some of you have no problem with batteries and some do.  I have an older ipod and the battery life is not so good, but its getting constantly recharged in my car through the fm transmitter.  I also have a shuffle solely because they are god sends for runners.  The shuffle has extraordinary good battery life.

Well on my ipod I have something like 2000 songs on it which is around 6.5 GB and I'm not a really big music fan more of a casual fan.  Now I work with a couple of guys that make me look like a rank amateur.  One has 75 GB of music, another 65 GB and the third makes us all look bad, 150 GB of music!!

Nothing good ever comes from a bad attitude.

Lunar, I have a 6 gig pink mini, and it's brilliant :)  One word of advice tho, if you have it engraved, you can't return it, even if it gets messed up. The only recourse is to send it back to Apple, and let them fix whatever is wrong with it. I just went thru this with my youngest's ipod that I got her for Christmas.

The best information source about ipods is www.ipodlounge.com.  When Dani's ipod went on the blink, it helped me figure out what was wrong with it.

I now want an 'Idog',, http://www.universal-models.com/iDog/i_Dog_E.htm

My pink ipod is the the best gadget ever :)

Rechargeable batteries have a limited number of charge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced. Battery life and the number of charge cycles vary by use and settings.

Certain types of rechargeable cells also exhibit a kind of "memory" effect if you always charge them before they're run right down    This ends up reducing the effective ability to hold a charge in the long term.    It's fine to plug-in for a top-up charge when needed, but it's a good idea to run the battery right down and then give it a full charge from time to time.

How about any suggestions on the best place to buy one?
(aside from in the States?) ;)
Hollywood, CA -> London, UK 2004
London, UK -> Long Beach, CA 2007

Best 3 1/2 years of my life!
