apple just came out with something better than the 20GB color iPod!

http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html

Better Yet
Time for the world’s best music player to take the stage for another encore. In 30GB and 60GB(1) models that hold up to 15,000(2) songs, full-color album art and up to 25,000 photos(3), the new iPod makes the most of your music and more. Yeah, you’ve heard that tune before. Only now, you can watch it, too. With support for up to 150 hours(4) of video and a 2.5-inch color display, the new iPod lets you take music videos and TV shows on the road.

ah isn't technology great? i bought the 20 GB color iPod at the end of the summer just as it came out... and now it is obsolete!

I also just bought my first digital camera with all the lastest do-dads to find out later that WiFi is the newest thing to put on your digi cam... I guess there will always be a market for the newest things!

When are they going to combine a mobile phone with bluetooth, full wireless networking including email and web browsing, multi-megapixel camera, PDA features, 10s of GBs of MP3 storage into one unit?

Does anything out there come close to all of this functionality in one unit?

I was reading the specs on the new one, that will show video, but I cant seem to find if it's storage is compact flash like the shuffle, or still a proper harddrive. Does anyone know? I think it's a great idea, but I will wait a year to see what they come out with next year,,lol. Too many advances too quick, and it is annoying to get the latest and greatest, only to have it obsolete in a few months. Ick

Apple should just come out with an Ipod mobile phone.  60GB of music/video/artwork, all they need to add on is a simple capability to make and receive phone calls, texts and video messaging.  Everybody could just walk around with one of those and forget about buying a computer, a music player, a phone, etc.  :D

I know these iPods and mp3 players, etc are 'the thing to have', and it seems just about everybody's got one... but im left thinking 'when would i ever use it?'.

I have a CD player in my car,  plus, isnt it illegal to wear headphones while driving?   So i wouldnt use it in the car.

We have a radio on all day at work, plus, if i was wearing headphones, i couldnt hear the phones, or if someone was talking to me, so i wouldnt use it at work.

At home, im usually watching TV, but even if i was on the computer or doing something around the house, i wouldnt want to be wearing headphones in case DH was talking to me, or the phone was ringing, or the dog was whining to go out, or if someone chapped the door... so i wouldnt use it in the house.

What else is left?!  :-\\\\

I guess im one of these people that the new technology is wasted on!

i thought that way too otterpop...
ipods actually have a 'thing'/device/gadget where you are 'attach' it to your car so you can use it in the car.
i would think its illegal to drive and wear headphones!!

i use mine on the train when going places (w/o my son, of course!), around the house while cleaning and while taking a bath.....

I keep my ipod on an 'imotion' speaker dock, so I can do things around the house, and be able to still have conversations with people. Just walking around with earphones on all the time, is a bit anti social really,, so I rarely use the earphones. My teenagers are rarely without their earphones tho,,lol. I also have something to use in the car, that allows the ipod music to play over the car's speakers. I guess if one doesn't listen to music, or isn't bothered about being able to chose what they listen to, then it would be wasted on them. I find that it made travel alot easier for me, no more cd's to pack, etc.   I havn't tried using one for photographs yet, and I am not sure if the video one would really benefit me, but I will probably upgrade at some point.  Will wait until my little pink mini explodes or breaks,,lol.

I am really into music, but... if i want music in the house, i can listen to it on the computer, or the hi-fi.  And in the car i have a CD player, so that's me sorted.   Those car things do sound cool... where you can plug your ipod in to play through the car speakers.

I can definitely see the benefit of having it if you're commuting by train or bus, but since i dont do that, an ipod would just be a waste of money for me.

I didn't think I'd use an mp3 player either, and had asked for a portable cd player for Xmas from my husband, thinking with all the cds I have that would be more practical. He went ahead and got the mp3 player which we ended up upgrading to an iPod because the one he got was faulty. Oh my god, I love this machine. I never thought I would for some of the same reasons you list. I too am a music lover and have loads of cds.

The iPod is like the BEST radio station ever because it only plays your favorite stuff. Instead of having a 5 cd player for your hi-fi, you get a cord to hook your iPod to the stereo and viola! You can listen to anything off your cd collection at the touch of a button. I have listened to cds and music I haven't heard in years now, lol.

Hooking your iPod to your car stereo is very simple, too, I got the gadgets at Target when I was in the states (they are available here too) and the rest of my visit home I was able to use the iPod in the car all the time which was great. Instead of having dozens of cds/tapes in the glovebox/on the floor, it's all on the iPod.

I got some external speakers that I keep in the bedroom but they are also AA battery powered and I use it like a portable radio, it goes into the kitchen and the bath with me when I want to listen to music and it even went into the labor ward when I was giving birth to my second child, it was great, my favorite music was playing in the background and it was a big help/relaxing.

Seriously, I am not one to get suckered for gadgets but man this is great. And it marries two of my favorite pastimes, music and the computer.

Anyway. I love it. Didn't think I would.

I was the same way otterpop... i just didn't understand the hype. The first one I ever saw was in 2001. i thought, oh that's nice and then i moved to africa and bam! it was all over the place in the western world. i thought, who needs to carry ALL of their music with them ALL of their time? I came back to CA earlier this year... I live in Apple/iPod "country" so I can't speak for the the rest of the states, and no kidding they were EVERYWHERE. Even my littlest sis had a shuffle.

I got one because it was free when I bought my iBook. I upgraded to the color 20GB. I don't use it a lot when I am home but it is great for travelling. I was in DC and NYC for a month recently and iPods were dominating the metro and subways.

It does encourage antisocial behavior... well, unless you count peeking over to see what the other person is lisetening to  ;) I am a little young to remember this entirely, but wasn't it the same when the "old fashioned" Sony Walkmans became popular?

mattj74 - I don't know if there's anything like it in the UK yet, but Motorola, Apple, and Cingular just came out with a new phone that comes with iTunes here in the States. Here's the link.....http://onlinestorez.cingular.com/cell-phone-service/itunes_ROKR.html.

Thanks pdxgal, I have heard of this one because the ad for it is splattered all over the place here because Madonna is promoting it.  As far as I can tell, it only allows for a measly 512MB Flash card storage.

I know the new Nokia N91 is a music mobile phone and it has a 4GB storage on it.

Also, the Sony Ericsson P990i is coming out at the beginning of 2006 and it will have 4GB of memory stick storage and is a full PDA with complete office capabilities:  large screen, synching up to Outlook email, etc.

The iTunes interface on the Motorola sounds interesting, they're definitely going to get a market there.

But when you compare these phones storage to the 60GB that the new iPod can hold they pale in comparison.  Having said that, the iPod's primary function is to store music, video, etc and I believe they're a bit bigger than mobiles generally or maybe I'm wrong about that.

Anyway, it looks like Apple's making a move in the right direction partnering up with Motorola as people will eventually not just want a music/video machine but will want an all-in-one, do everything whizz bang unit but I suppose the technology has to catch up.

I do see what you're saying, Otterpop - I probably wouldn't use it too much if it wasn't for my commute. But it's a godsend on the train/tube. And I actually like it better than the portable CD player in the car 'cause you've got such selection - 500 albums as opposed to however many CDs you have in the glove compartment. I don't listen to radio much 'cause I find it doesn't really reflect my taste.... We've talked about getting a docking station for the Ipod at home, but I'm old fashioned and like the ceremony of opening the CD case and sticking it in to play....
