Really bad heartburn
« on: August 31, 2005, 03:17:56 AM »
This heartburn is getting worse and worse, nothing seems to help,I've taken tablets and rennie's, I've tried doing natural things like walking around and not laying down & also drinking water, and I've tried eating small meals, but still it seems like nothing so far is helping, tonight it got to the point where my heartburn was so bad I spent 10 minutes in the bathroom vomiting.

Anyone have/had this problem? Did anything help your heartburn that I havent mentioned above?

Heartburn, heartburn, is terrible.  I had terrible case of heartburn and vomitting with my second pregnancy.  I used Maalox all the time and then used gingersnaps for the feeling of nausea.  It is just terrible, I am sorry you have to go through this.

I had acid reflux in my last pregnancy so bad I developed an oesophaegeal ulcer.

And it's back for more this time round at 24 weeks.

I've been eating almonds - not salted, not smoked - just almonds.  Eat a handful before bedtime particularly.  In fact, eat small amounts of protein all day.  But gobble some almonds before bed and hopefully it'll stave off that waking in the middle of the night with acid in your throat.

Sleep on two pillows.

If that doesn't help, see the GP and have them prescribe you Gavison - b/c that stuff is expensive and you'll need a lot of it.  From there, they'll try Zantac.

I feel your pain!

The baby has now pushed up all your organs.  Your body is also swirling w/a hormone that causes muscles to relax so the uterus can stretch.  But the hormone is not uterine-specific so as a result other muslces - like the valve between your stomach and your throat, is also nice and relaxed, allowing acid to escape the stomach at times.

I had acid reflux with my last baby-to the point that I still suffer today.  If two pillows don't help, take the couch cushion to bed and prop yourself up.
If it continues with the vomiting, DON'T just keep suffering.  Get yourself to the GP and tell him how bad it is.  You probably need something stronger than Rennies anyway.

My doctor gave me a prescription for Zantac, worked wonders.

Too right!  And if the Zantac doesn't work, DON'T let them fob you off!  'Oh, it's just normal pregnancy problems'.  Vomitting stomach acid isn't normal, and there's stuff that can be done about it, stuff even stronger than Zantac that you can safely take.  I wound up in hospital after being told Zantac was all they could do w/ ulcer from hell - on a drip b/c I was unable to eat or drink.

I had it badly with all four kids but Jack was the worst. He was enormous and the bigger he got the worse the heartburn got. I used to have a huge bottle of Gaviscon (sp?) next to my bed that I would swig off of all night. In the end it didnt help at all. I had to learn to sleep sitting up.  :-\\\\ Hang in there Carly. It's almost over!

it's not fun, also I found that chewing sugarless peppermint gum helped during the night. or sucking sugarless peppermints. I don't know why it helped me, but to this day, I get acid reflux, and I alway keep peppermint gum or mints handy just in case. Gingersnaps helped too, and ginger ale.

I second sleeping with a bottle of Gaviscon. I lived off of that in my first pregnancy.  Had a girl with a head of dark hair. This time around, I was expecting the same but didn't get heartburn as bad. Had a boy with ginger hair. Chalk me up as an old wive's tale in the flesh.

I hope it eases for you - good luck. The Gaviscon should help and if not there's other good advice here. Poor thing.

I used liquid calicium my friend got me from a health food store.  It worked better than the Gaviscon did and had a better flavour.

Deffo!  My gran got it with all three of her sons but not at all w/her three daughters.  And all had dark hair.

The OB said it has to do w/the size of your torso and w/the size and position of the baby, unfortunately.

I've got a short torso so I'm done for no matter what.

All my sons were born with a nice, full head of hair except Coby. He was a cue ball! And I suffered with horrible heartburn with him as well. :D

Oddly enough, I never started having heartburn until 5 years after my last baby...never got it whilst pregnant.

But now suffer so bad from it at times it makes me cry...

My only bit of advice is to avoid acidy foods in the evening.  No reason to give your stomach a chance to make it worse!
