moving pets to UK?
« on: September 04, 2005, 05:09:11 PM »
Did anyone bring their pets over? We are going through a process called the PETS Scheme, where you get your animals microchipped, then vaccinated for rabies, then wait 6 months, have them tested again, before bringing them. Has anyone gone through this? How did your animals do? Did you ship them yourself, or use a petmovers service? Costs?  Suggestions?  Thanks!

Hello J. I'm going through the process myself right now -- I have a piss-and-moan-about-defra thread on it someplace. Someone has just recommended the company Airborne Animals to me, and I've just filled out their online form for an estimate from New York to Bristol. I have the choice of either sending my cat on ahead (my fiance is already in Bristol), or taking him with me on the day I go. If this estimate is at all reasonable, I think I'll send him ahead. It's my biggest worry about this move, and to have that off my mind the day I go will be a godsend.

I know exactly how you feel! We have a black lab, a collie, and a cat, to send over. I only hope that we have all the correct paperwork, as I could not stand for them to be quarantined! Good luck! jdodd

i just finished the pets process. got to england on the 8th.

feel free to pm me with any questions.

i did it myself, no movers. it did cost alot. cost 175 for custom charges to get him in the country, about 550 for his plane ticket, and maybe 250 for total vet charges. but oh well, i guess we think its worth it huh?

i did notice in your post though.. you need to get the blood test done one month after the vaccination, that is the date for your 6 months, the date the blood is drawn for the test.
married my husband and moved to england sept 2005, moved back to USA sept 2008

Right on the blood test, they are already microchipped, and they go back in a couple of weeks. We are planning our move in April when they will be ready to go. Thanks for any advice!Julie

Crap above, the estimate from the pet movers was expensive. I'm going to take him with me when I fly instead. One thing that made me feel a whole lot better -- actually calling the airline's pet cargo department and asking questions. I'm going with BA and they seem to know exactly what they're doing as far as the PETS scheme goes, and what you need to do. It took a huge load off my mind to speak with them.

Once you've moved your pets over, were you able to find a rental that allowed you to keep them? I've been looking at rentals (we'd hope to buy, but figured we'd need a rental place first) and I haven't seen anything specific about pets one way or another. Do most landlords allow you to keep pets in your house/flat?

We had a terrible time in Bristol finding a place that would take a cat. Estate agents actually told us they wouldn't bother showing us any apartments, because they knew the landlords would not take pets. Reflection of the housing market, I suppose. When there are plenty of tenants and few spaces, landlords can be picky.

At any rate, in the end we found a place we really loved, and just kept our mouths shut about the cat until we actually had seen the place, established a negotiating relationship with the landlord, and taken a look at the lease. It had no pet clause and in the end it turned out the landlord didn't care. But I think we got lucky.

One thing I've noticed about UK flats is that many of them seem to have carpeting instead of hardwood or laminate floors. I was a bit surprised at this, but it may help to explain why no one wanted a pet. I'm not sure if it's the case in other cities, but you might want to give yourself a big head start on searching, just in case.

What we did in Bath was similar to Falada (by the way Falada - did you receive my message? - I never heard back from you).
We were first rejected when going to estate agencies and saying we had a dog.  But when we called to see specific places, we would then bring it up and negotiate it.  We also made a flyer with some pictures and basic stats of our animal - with quotes from the references from our past landlord, etc.   This seemed to really seal the deals
We too got lucky and found a great place.

hi all, we just moved our 70 pound dog to the uk with british airlines and it was a complete success.  Make sure you start the process very early, at least 8 months before you plan on leaving to make sure you have all the paperwork you'll need for the pets scheme.  The only caution I would give is that my wife and I think that with vet bills, cargo charges, etc. it probably cost a total of $2,000 dollars to ship our buddy over.  Cargo charges were around 1600 alone.  The Pets and USDA hoops weren't too hard to jump through but we had a good vet and she really helped us a lot.

We flew with BA from Atlanta to London, and then drove to Scotland with a hired car.  He loves it here, he gets to run all over our neighborhood golf course in the evenings.  Also, check with cargo and get the dimensions for the kennel you will need.  We were going to use his normal kennel, but it wasn't big enough.  Luckily they let us use one of their which was huge.  The dog seemed no worse for wear, he just wanted to get the hell out of the cargo area when we picked him up.

Thanks for giving us that info! We are coming in June, so hopefully we will be able to do everything the right way! I am very anxious about putting my pets, (all 3) on a plane. I am glad it turned out well for you!  Julie :)

Hey All!
Just wanted to let you all know that my dog Jackie arrived here in Scotland just a few hours ago!  She flew from Houston into London Gatwick yesterday, and I drove up to Aberdeen over 2 days.  Everything went super smoothly, I definitely owe a big thanks to my pet shipper, Jane with BKS International, who has posted a bunch of info on uk-yankee about shipping pets to the UK.  She helped me out with the health certificate, annex form, and USDA endorsement.  My pooch is doing fine, we just went for a long walk in the park.  I'm so happy that she's here with me!

In case anyone needs the KSU lab location/form to send bloodwork for FAVN testing:  http://www.vet.k-state.edu/depts/rabies/favntest.htm

The ph# is 785-532-4483, cost is $40 per test.  Gotta wait at least 4 weeks from rabies immun date before blood is drawn and sent,  microchips must be in too.
