The nasal vaccine - FluMist - is only effective in children.  Adults have to get the jab.

Again, today's flu vaccines are made from inactive, killed virus.  You cannot get the flu from the jab!  What can happen, however, is that you contract the virus before the jab has a chance to work - it takes about a fortnight.  OR, you could already have the virus at the time you get the jab - influenza has a long incubation period.

Except for the flu mist, which is live virus.  http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/nasalspray.htm

Yes, but not used on adults.  And not available in the UK at all.

I went yesterday and they didn't have the preservative free, so I probably won't get one this year.

I get one every year.  No flu or flu-like symptoms so far.

I have a question abot the JAB  >:(

Do you know if the version you get in the US, is the same as the shot in the UK?

I am trying to figure out if it is worth going through the physical pain of it here  ;)

Yes.  It's for whatever strains they think will be most common that year.  Some contain a preservative called thiomersal, which is mercurial.  This is actually fine for a healthy adult - NOT a child - to take as long as the person isn't pregnant, may be pregnant or nursing and has no known health conditions, such as immune deficiency disorders.

If you're in doubt, as the GP to see the leaflet that comes w/it beforehand and do a search.

After having had genuine flu several times, I'll take the physical pain of a jab any day over the chance of contracting the real thing.  Yuk.

Also - if you have had any reaction to thimerosal in the past, which can be found in some contact lens solutions, you should not take the flu shot.  This is why I was not able to take one last week.

Also - egg allergies.  There is egg yolk used in the preparation of some vaccines.  Check with your GP and they should be able to tell you if you can take the brand they carry, or if they can get one you can tollerate.

I think that's a point which many people do not realize.  The shot is not a guaranteed immunization against all possible variants of 'flu, just the selected few which are considered to be the most likely at that point in time.

I think it'd be pretty nigh on impossible to immunise a person against all strains of flu.

Aillidh will have her second dose tomorrow.

We were all vaccinated w/'Inflexal V', made in an Italian lab called Berna.

After having contracted a nasty cough on the bus, I don't regret having had the jab this year at all.

I had my first flu jab last year as a result of having developed asthma.  I had a nasty case of flu in March so it didn't work for me. Still, I was prepared to give it a go again so I went in for a jab yesterday......and they took my temperature and said I was feverish. No jab.

Guess who is sat here with the beginnings of flu :-X

Bummer, Hopster!  I know one person down South who was asthmatic and had flu already.  It was a mild case - if there is such a thing - and she is recovering, but the chemist said there was a 'mini-epidemic' in her area.

Any chance of getting Tamiflu?  It really should be reserved for people who have underlying health conditions who develop flu.

Same thing happened to my dad last week - he has hypertension and is 69 - and his GP (admittedly, this is in the US) was able to use a nasal swab test to diagnose influenza on the spot.  He gave Dad Tamiflu, and he was only down for 4 days instead of the usual fortnight.

We are supposed to bring my 4 year old in for her flu jab, but she has a cough/sniffles at the moment - do I need to wait until she is over whatever this is she has or will that be too late? And, is she too young? Thanks for any info.
