Hi, Tricia. There have been a lot of threads about this topic! You should find all you need here! Just to let you know, getting a pet ready to move to the UK is a six-month process ... you're either going to have to wait an extra month or so, or else move on your own and have your dog come over later on his own.

These might be of assistance:

If you don't find what you need there, try the DEFRA website. That's where I got all the info I needed when I moved. It's pretty clear and concise.

Best of luck to you and Emmitt!! :)

Hi,

This will get you started, I'm adding to it all the time but some stuff is just not clear on the Defra website.

If you have any problems maybe I can answer your questions.  I ship pets to the UK 2-3 times a week.

I'm getting ready to book our flight soon. Can anyone recommend a company that sells decent cat crates? I'd like to get one as soon as possible.

Also, does anyone have any preference regarding BA or Virgin? I've heard good things about both; my instinct is to go with BA. Don't know why. I'll be flying New York to Heathrow, and I hope I can go from JFK rather than Newark, as the latter will add about $75 in taxi fees onto the cost.

Ok I'm again confused over PETS.  I understand what I need to do for the British government but is there something I am supposed to do with the USDA in this whole scheme or not?

We have the chip, the shot, the test and results.  Now finalizing the documentation with my VET that I got from the DEFRA website.  But he's even unsure of any requirements with USDA.

TIA!!

As far as my research shows, the US has no requirements. But, please let me know if you find out about any. Thx!

Thank you, Jane. Your fact sheet was wonderfully icomprehensive and informative. I really appreciate the outline and will print it out and have my vet read it.

Thanks again!

BTW, hope you fared well during Rita!

Hi Paula,

Yes we were all vey lucky here in Houston.  Quite a bit of damage actually but nothing compared to the poor folks on the TX/LA border.  We finally got electricity, water and phones on yesterday for which everyone is grateful as its over 100 degrees here.  It's been quite a year hurricane wise and we've still got over 2 months left in the season.

If your vet has any questions you can e-mail me direct or call me.  I'll be happy to help.  Its the little snafu's that hold things up and Defra are picky picky picky! but hey, anything is better than the old 6 months quarantine.

Good luck
Jane

Thanks that answers a few questions.

I'm pretty upset right now.  Our cat is with a friend back home, she's just told us we have to do something about the cat in the next couple of days because she can't keep her anymore.  My family just balked as well.  So I guess the cat's coming early which may make all this a mute point anyway.
