Do newborns have nightmares?
« on: November 05, 2005, 10:44:50 PM »
On quite a few occasions, Courtney will be sleeping and she will kick her feet and arms in the air violently moving it around while screaming her head off, all while shes fast asleep. Sometimes the only way for her to calm down is when I  pick her up and give her a cuddle. My only guess is shes having nightmares, but I just dont know what a 2 week old can have nightmares about. The only thing that comes to mind is she had a traumatic birth being born via c-section. Anyone else ever go through this with their baby? And does anyone know if newborns can actually have nightmares?

Aillidh would do that as well.  Never could figure out why.  She was born during the hottest summer on record, however, and when my mom came across, she thought Aillidh was cold.  We'd be laying her down w/just a babygro on!  Sure enough, Mom put a little pair of light trousers on her and a light blanket and she slept much better.

Is Courtney at a good temp?  Touch the back of her neck to check.

the baby has been in an enclosed space for sometime and her hand and feet have been confined (sort of ) to her that was comforting...now her hand and feet are free and loose it can be a weird feeling that she may find unsettling perhaps wrapping her with a lightweight blanket not too tight for bed and don't cover her head*

*I have to check my HV book but I'm sure that was the advice on there for that.

We've tried that as well. But she *hates* her feet being covered, even if we put socks on her , she finds a way to kick them off. I've even pulled her socks up to her knees, but sure enough she finds a way to kick em across the room.
She only sleeps if we don't put anything over her feet. When she was born her feet were blue, so I'm not sure if that has something to do with her hatred of it

the radio worked wonders for us jess used to fall asleep to chatter and then when we put her in her room she began to cry like "hey where did everyone go?" sort of thing so one day I stuck on the radio in her room it was left on 24/7 it took a while to find a station she liked (Classic fm) and sure enough that worked!! she only woke up if opera came on...I email them a request and they aired it "Sorry little jessica no opera for a few hours"  ;D

You could try swaddling her with her feet sticking out at the bottom.  That way she'll still feel that "hug" around her body, but won't have her feet covered.  Or, she could be doing what all babies seem to do at about two weeks... drive you crazy with their weird behavior!  ;D ;)

lol how cute.
We do something similiar. Most of the day shes down in the living room where theres people and the tv. And whenever we brought her up her she'd cry as soon as we put her down in her moses basket,so last night I thought of that and we put a dvd on and sure enough she slept in her moses basket silently.Only thing is,the dvd went around and around non stop all night,so I ended up having dreams about the Bourne Identity all night, lol

That works for her when shes chooses not to be so stubborn. I use one of my shirts that has my scent on it to cover her with. I'm considering buying a recorder to record my heartbeat and place it in her moses basket with her

That's a good idea.  Of course, for the first eight weeks my son wouldn't sleep unless he was laying on me or my husband, so this is all conjecture on my part anyway.  Good luck!

That reminds me....my nephew had a bear that played a heartbeat sound when he was a baby and he loved it...

It says they're out of stock but Target has something similar that you may be able to fine somewhere else too:

lmao I think that would be a bit unnerving for me as well but it's supposed to remind the baby of being in the womb..... but speaking of unnerving, my bro has the Darth Vader from Star Wars BREATHING sound on his mobile as a ringtone.. when he's got that one set and someone phones him, we tell him "your phone's breathing" LOL I think it's a bit strange but highly amusing, unfortunately my mum absolutely hates it and shudders if his phone goes off  ;D

My babies also did this so I kep them swaddled at night. I thought the movement of their arms and legs was scaring them since they are used to being in a very close, tight environment.

Carly, do you have any receiving blankets? I havent seen them here but I have a few left over from my American kids. I never used them with Jack because he was too big for them but they are nice little blankets which you could swaddle her in. Let me know if you want them and Ill pop them in the post for you. I think I have two.
