when did you start wearing maternity clothes?
« on: December 08, 2005, 05:15:44 PM »
hello
needless to say i'm totally preoccupied with my first pregnancy. i'm 14 weeks today and have had to wear maternity clothes for about 2 weeks now.  i keep hearing how some people avoid them for months into their pregnancy and now i'm starting to feel like a giant cow.

when is normal to start needing maternity clothes?

cheers

5 months.  With both.  I'm a small-boned, naturally slender, short person, however.

I'm SO sick of these bloody clothes just now.  I can't wait to wear something different.  And some different shoes!  I've only got one pair that fits round my puffy ankles just now.  Feel like a barge.

I started wearing bigger clothes when I was about 16 weeks.

topshop has some nice peices you can buy online. (although it is frustrating to spend money on clothes you might not wear again...)

i'm about 5'9 with a medium build. i was really sick the first few weeks and all i could do to keep the nausea at bay was to eat, counter-intuitive as that sounds. i guess i must have 'blossomed' prematurely! not to mention the 1/2 bra sizes i've gone up! oi vey....

I did, too, but proper maternity wasn't till I was a bit further on.

Bet you were glad to put them all away . . .

Sigh . . .

My bra size never changed.  Still hasn't.  I haven't changed in body shape or weight, however, since I went through puberty.  In a way, it's good b/c I still have some cool clothes from the 80s that are serious vintage now!

Can't say I spent any money on maternity clothes - my mom bought me some from the US and I just used those.  They say to pack some maternity clothes in your hospital bag for the return home, but I was so sick of mine I just went to a charity shop and bought some jeans in a bigger size to wear until I got back to my old size.

Mimsy, I am the same way as you.  Started showing at 12 weeks or so (popped when I had the scan)  I'm about 16 1/2 weeks now and I can't fit into any other clothes at all.

When my other clothes were too tight!!!  ;D Can't remember how far on I was, but I had one huge complaint when I was pregnant.......my tummy wasn't round......I called it a sack of potatos!!! Cuz that's what it looked like, I was sooooo jealous of all these other pregnant women, with their perfectly round bumps, and mine was all lumpy and bumpy, it really did look like I had a sack of potatos under my clothes.  So I avoided wearing tight tops, and opted for the loosest I could find.

stacey - glad i'm not alone. i'm obvs reading heat/grazia magazines too much, with these women with perfect bumps and non-pregnant bods

i am feeling like a cow, but secretly enjoying the whole maternity clothes experience. never in my life have i worn giant tent t-shirts! lol... i even got some maternity jeans, but b/c my waist no longer holds 'em up i'm constantly sporting builders bum when i bend over. that's a new one!

Nope! I had a baby boy, and it's funny, cuz I was carrying high, and we were at a shop, and an asian lady looked at me, and said, "it's a boy, you are carrying him high up" we did know the sex at the time, and were astonished to tell her that she was right!!!!

that is funny.

i thought boys carried low!? oh what do i know... i've heard back morning sickness means a boy and heard the opposite that it means a girl. seems like different countries/cultures have different tales for these things...

I think it's all a bunch of baloney :P  Seriously, everyone says something different.  I've been to those old wives tales sites and they all say the opposite stuff.  Rich's Nana thinks it's a boy, because she did one of those string tests and she has only ever been wrong once.  I almost want to prove her wrong, is that a bad thing ;D

How you carry has ZERO to do w/the sex - everything to do w/the mother's body shape and size, baby's position, etc.

The only surefire ways to tell the sex are CVS, amnio or childbirth.

Morning sickness is a function of your body's reaction to fluctuating hormone levels in pregnancy - zip to do w/the sex of the child.  I was hospitalised with 'morning' sickness - which lasted all day long - w/my daughter last time.

As I started to grow out of my regular clothes I started incorperating maternity clothes, about 12 weeks.  I had to use saftey pins to hold my pants up for a while since the maternity clothes were to big for about 2 months.  I had to keep wearing them for about 4 months after having the baby too.
