Good or bad areas in Glasgow?
« on: December 14, 2005, 03:06:48 PM »
For those of you in Scotland, do you know anything about these areas?  We are moving to Glasgow in the summer and someone posted yesterday to live on the west side if possible.  I've been looking at flats online just to get an idea of what you can get for the price, I'm wondering if these are considered good or bad areas..... Dennistoun and Croftoot

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi there

I asked my husband, who is originally from Glasgow, about those areas and he didn't think they were very nice. In general, he said to avoid the east end, especially Easterhouse, Ballieston, Balornock, Darnley, Nitshill.  The west end, Partick, Partickhill, Broomhill, Jordanhill are probably the nicest, bits of the south side like Pollokshaws, Shawlands are pretty reasonable. If you can afford the West End go for it, outside of central Glasgow, Newton Mearns and Giffnock are supposed to be very nice.  Try www.upmystreet.com to get a general idea of an area before you go. They have neighbourhood profiles that describe generally what an area is like. If you can, get a full postcode for the property you are interested in to get a more accurate profile (otherwise it uses a central one). It also has school information with things like average test scores compared to the national average. Hope that helps.

I dont know Croftfoot at all... dont even know where it is.
But Dennistoun... I wouldn't live there.  I wouldnt live anywhere in the East End at all.

I'm so glad you asked this question!  My sister and I are in the exact same situation - we're moving to Glasgow this Spring and the letting agent (we finally found one who'd work with us while we're still here in the US) who's helping us just suggest a property to us today which is in Dennistoun - I knew from reading on here to avoid the East side, but I hadn't a clue about Dennistoun or where it was until reading this - so thanks for asking this!

And thanks again for all the great suggestions about the areas.

Melissa, if you want, perhaps we can chat about things we're learning as we go along.

Heather

www.dennistoun.co.uk

It's a community page, so they do try to put a positive spin on a lot of things, but it doesnt change the fact that there is a fair amount of poverty and a lot of drugs/drug deaths.  I hear it is improving, though... if that helps.  ???

Thanks so  much for the replies!  Since I have never been to Scotland, I don't know what is on the East side or West side, so thanks for answering that for me.

Heather, I'd love to chat!!  We are aiming to move there late July or early August.  It'd be great to get to know someone who is going to be there.  I was going to send you an email, but it was hidden on your profile.  Feel free to go to my profile and get my email or my messenger screen names. Look forward to talking to ya!

Melissa

You really need to look at a map of the city when considering areas to live in...
Good luck.

I agree with Begbielass. The eastside isn't that nice ( I live in Rutherglen, which is nearing the east. It isn't great, but it isn't that bad actually. ) The west and south sides, I heard were really nice, but I was recently looking for flats in that area, and it is a bit pricey  :o I'm sure you can find bargains though. I've always wanted to live in the West End, which has a lot of students in it, but that is pricey. obviously, don't live anywhere near the football stadiums! ( Ibrox, Celtic Park in Parkhead and Hampden, which is very close by here, but thankfully not too close ! ) as there will be a lot of drunk crazy football fanatics and tons of bars.

MTA: Look at this map here. It is a map that shows bus routes, but it shows you all the areas. I like looking at it when I have to venture out or find different areas of Glasgow. It's in PDF format.

I'm a Scot who now lives in England (and thinking of going to USA!) and lived in Glasgow for 3 years and I'll echo the messages above - The West end of Glasgowis preferable (but pricier) than the East. Dennistoun has nothing going for it in my opinion and Easterhouse should be avoided. Glasgow is an amazing city though, probably the most lively city in the UK and certainly the one with the best sense of humour.

Things to do while living in Glasgow:

-George Square on Hogmanay (New Years Eve) - awesome.
-Go to a Rangers vs Celtic (Old Firm) football match - but choose your colours carefully!
-Go and see Billy Connolly perform in his home city - you will be in pain with laughter
-Climb Ben Lomond (the Southernmost Munro in Scotland and a short drive from the city centre) from the summit of which on a clear day you can see from the Firth of Clyde on one side of Scotland to the Firth of Forth on the other. Plus the best view of Loch Lomond around.

Unless you're moving there to open up a knife shop.   ;D

Sadly, East Glagow has the lowest life expectancy for males in all Western Europe.

Hey thanks much for that fantastic bus map - I myself am very familiar with most of central and west Glasgow because I'm a dual national and my family lives in Inverclyde, so I've been to Glasgow many times.  But I know nothing of the east/south and North ends of Glasgow.  I put a thread on here regarding the rental deposits in Scotland.

Melissa, I'll send a PM or email - my sister and I are bringing my cats with us, so finding a letting agent has been a real "treat" :)

Just wanted to add that the West End and South Side are not ALL good... they have their rough districts as well.
Just not as many as the East End and North.

Good point - I finally got my mum to agree to have a chat with my granda and aunt to go have a look at flats for us since this is just too darn complicated
