That's really good to know. :)

And thank you so much for the links, Paula!   ;D   You all are really helpful, and if it wasn't for this thread and all your valuable input, so many of us hopeful, UK-SWs-to-be would be would be completely lost.  Thanks. :)

I just got back from the Fed Ex office.  My wife's and my Entry Clearances arrived.  So, now all the paperwork is here.... I leave Saturday at 7am from Dallas.  Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Hello Everyone,

I am new here, and will be reviewing all of the posts in this section, as well as the board in general.  I am a Social Worker presently employed in Leicester, and would love to communicate with all Social Workers employed in the UK.  I would love to share ideas/information with everyone.

Don

I am doing child protection work now, but in the states I was a psychotherapist.....  I do the kind of work that keeps me employed, lol.  But, I am planning to direct my career more now that I am somewhat established here in the UK....

Hi, Don, and welcome. I am a social worker with individuals with developmental disabilites in NC but will be moving to London in the next month or so to work with children in need. Looking forward to chatting!

Hi, I've read that you can do some types of social work without having a degree.  Does anyone have any information on that?  I work as an instructional aide with older teens and young adults who have autism and other neurological disorders.   I was wondering if this type of work could get me into the social work field.  I appreciate any advice someone can offer.  Thanks.

You may be able to be a Social Work Assistant.  Which usually means you do all the work social workers do but you get paid a lot less.  I'm not sure if you have to have a degree but I know that Social Work Assistants do not have social work degrees.  But I think the job you have now sounds more rewarding and interesting.

Thanks for the info.  I like helping people and from what I'm seeing, social work is a good field to get into and very much in demand.

Yes, but in my experience in the UK, it was a lot more paperwork than I was used to in the US.  However, my job was different.  I am just explaining that the job you have sounds to be more exciting because it sounds like you are able to work with the clients and in Child Protection in the UK (as in the US) it's all paperwork.

Thanks for the insight.  Ugh...I dealt with enough paperwork in insurance and yeah, I definitely like that I am able to work directly with people.  I appreciate the extra info on that.

Just giving you a heads up.  If you do find a social work job in the UK without a lot of paperwork, let me know if they have more openings! ;D
