Posting letters to the USA from the UK
« on: February 17, 2006, 02:01:50 PM »
I wondered if anyone knows about mail here Chris and I posted paper work to a lawyer in December 05 and it still has not got there, the thing is we had decided to apply for us to live in the states but then decided against it in January of this year because of the children and the letter with all the applications and info has never got to the lawyer so they said which concerns us. What is the possibility of it being picked up on the USA side by whom ever it is that deals with post and being opened as it had our return address on it.

Do you think we may have a problem if this is the case in April when we go back to the states? We will have all our details and proof of returning to the UK as we are applying as soon as we get there and have got married.

I know my fiancee mailed me a Valentines day card 2 weeks ago and it's not here yet. I have sent several packages and cards and things to the UK and none of them have ever gotten lost. Usually if it makes it to the USA and it's not delivered they will return to the sender. I don't know if that is the case with UK mail. If it's not here, it may show up sooner or later :( Good luck.

As long as you haven't included any original paperwork - birth certificates etc its not too disastrous.. The UK/US postal system is pretty reliable and it may have reached your lawyer and become "mislaid". If you put a return address you may get it back, or who knows it may turn up at your lawyers now you have enquired about it with them  :) As long as they know to take no action on it, all should be well.

Well it USED to be reliable but I sent a parcel airmail to someone in the US in September and she didn't get it til mid November.  However our Xmas cards got there in record time, 3 days the week before Xmas which wasn't bad. If you have to send anything important make sure you use a trackable method, like Swiftair, it costs a bit extra but worth it for the peace of mind.   Have you contacted the Post Office about your missing packet Sonya/Chris?

I wouldn't worry about it, even if it did get lost.  Its a felony to open up mail addressed to another person, plus I don't think many people would be interested in what you mailed (unless it had cash in it..in that case, I hope it arrives at my door! :P
As long as the person you addressed it to knows you have changed your plans, you should be fine!
I'm a worrier, so I know what you must be feeling, but try not to worry too much! :)

Have a great weekend!

My fiance in the UK sent me a Christmas card - not here yet, although the Christmas cards from his parents that were sent AT THE SAME TIME FROM THE SAME BOX arrived on time with no problem - go figure

Thankyou so much wish I could turn my brain off sometimes April is so close and I just keep finding things to worry about with regards to this visa errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :).

We have emailed the post office and have now got to get a form from them.

Thank goodness we did not put anything in it that was original.

Thanks everyone.

This is a good warning - if you send anything through the post, even if it is recorded delivery, take copies, even of the application form.  If you are sending original documents overseas always send them recorded, and consider getting certified copies of things such as passports (which really shouldn't be sent overseas anyway).  There is usually no need for UK birth and marriage certificates, as thes are easily replacable.

We where lucky that all though this has been a pain nothing we sent was an original other than the pass port pic's, we where just concerned as to where it could be and if anyone could open it as it was private and it was done when we thought we might want to relocate to the usa instead but things have changed and we decided it would be better for us all to be here the boy's and all that.

I do agree that sending anything important is a no no for us now via the post if we can help it what a pain.

My English fiance was SOOOO reluctant to send his birth certificate and passport - fortunately both came intact - now if I could only find the letter from his landlord...

Liz is visiting in a couple of weeks, and she's taking my passport and such back with her; this is one hell of a weight off my mind, I can tell you, since I was very worried about posting it...!
If I send things overseas, even just a letter, I ALWAYS put my address on the back. Royal Mail WILL send any undelivered post back to you, as long as they themselves get it back.

I think it is a very bad idea to be in a different country from your passport!

Why don't you get a certificed copy instead?

I'm still waiting for my Christmas cards from the last two years and my Valentine's Day card that were sent from the UK.   [smiley=shout.gif]

No.  You only need to send the original when you are getting something stamped in your passport.  Unless I have misunderstood, and you are the applicant not the sponsor....

You really shouldn't send your passport overseas anyway.
