Television tax - should you pay
« on: April 02, 2006, 10:55:23 AM »
Thoughts?  I was just about to go pay this thing, then I wondered would I be the only sucker who does?

And what else - a toaster tax?  An ipod tax?

paying for it isn't an option if you want to watch TV.  but a £1000 fine is.

Yeah sorry it needs paying,  you can get away without it for a short while but they will catch up with your pretty quickly if you don't. If you buy a TV or a freeview box or order sky etc they pass your details on to the TV licensing people.

See I don't agree with this...we pay it but I do so reluctantly

We don't watch BBC our coverage is REALLY crap here on the IOM. I pay for my sky I think it should be Incorporated into it.

Oh, I don't agree with it either, but you do have to pay unfortunately.  Sucks really.

Its a "tax", not just a bill.  If you don't pay it they will take you to court, and potentially imprison you!  It contributes towards the BBC website.

It contributes towards the BBC website.

Looks like they plan to include ads on the BBC website when displayed aboard.

oh they're very persistent! my friend lives in a street that had its name changed and she has a TV licence with her address as the current street name but she still gets the threatening letters addressed to her at the other street name!! she's phoned and written to them about it and they still send letters, people have even called round when she's been out at work.  :o

See I don't agree with this...we pay it but I do so reluctantly

Agree...don't even get me started..... :-X :-X :-X

Well, I will start! lol I have my rant when its due, have my husband pay for it because I don't really want to know about it and then pretend it doesn't really exist....that is the only way I can deal with it.  Silly I know!

Legally, you are obliged to obtain a license (i.e. pay the tax) if you install and use any device to receive television broadcasts.  That means any broadcast -- Terrestrial, satellite, or cable.

There isa growing resistance to the license, however, and a great many people who refuse to pay it:
