Hee hee I made my own yogurt!
« on: April 09, 2006, 09:00:15 PM »
I've been wanting to do this ever since our year in India where our cook made us homemade yogurt every few days.  So last night I did it!  It's so easy and it turned out perfectly.  Now you may be asking, why the heck do you want to make yogurt when you can buy it for about 50p in the store?  Well, yes I admit it's more the fun of it rather than the economy.  But I may keep trying to make it rather than buy and see how I get on.  DH is so excited about coming home and tasting it!   ;D

Oh and more pierogis will be made this weekend for Easter Sunday lunch!

I used to make my own too and my dad used to make it when I was growing up. Back then the yoghurt you could get in the shops was *^&$^^$@!!! but now there are so many good ones available it's easier to buy it.

Yeah I think my big problem will be remembering to buy the whole milk so that I can make it before we run out altogether.  We just seem to go through SO MUCH yogurt that I'm constantly buying those damn tubs.  To tell you the truth I think I'm most annoyed with constantly throwing those things away. We don't have plastic recycling near our place!  ???

jklm you can have some starter of course!

At one time someone also gave me a yoghurt "plant" - it was a kind of spongey looking thing, you put it in a bowl of milk for a few hours and it turned it into yoghurt. It was weird. It was a bit sharper tasting than I like so I stopped using it after a while.

The greek style yoghurt you buy in the shops is usually made with cream so you would need to use that intead of milk. Also, you can make it thicker by straining it through muslin for a few hours - the whey all runs out.  We used to hang ours in the garden.

Hee hee that's funny - Greece is the only country that makes decent yogurt!  But yeah, there's no other country that gets its own type of yogurt, is there?  I don't even know what the difference is between Greek yogurt and other types?

i dont care what they call it, as long as it's thick and creamy!
dont like thin, runny yoghurt.

i use 'em to make Aillidh believe she's getting the commercial stuff.   ;D

they're also good for crafts that involve fiddly bits - cardmaking, jewellry, etc.
