The same way I've always sold my cars -- put an ad in the paper and in the Free Trader or Auto Trader (one of those freebie classified newspaper things). It's pretty easy! :D

Er, I parked it at my parents for about five years till they got fed up and sold it to the guy who drives the garbage truck.     :o

I got lucky and my dad is a sucker (in the best way possible).  My younger sister was graduating from college a month after I moved to the UK, so my dad bought the car from me with the intention of re-selling to her a month later.   1 year on and she still hasn't made a payment.  I feel bad for my poor dad, but the rest of us saw that coming a mile away.  I almost didn't let him buy it as I knew it would happen and hate that my younger sister gets away with everything....jealous sibling tirade over.

Before all this happened - I swear I didn't even ask him to do this - I was planning on putting it in some local papers and on some on-line sites.  I think you have to pay for ads on most sites, but I figured in this day and age, it would get more veiwers than a newspaper.

I would also see if any local used car dealerships would buy it from you.  They may not offer the most competitve price, but it will be sold and you don't have to stress about it close to your move date.

Do you mean before moving?

I sold mine on Craig's List.

Most big newspapers will automatically put the car online as well once you buy a print ad. It's really not all that expensive and SO worth it -- compared to the price you'd get if you took it to a dealer. I've sold about 4 cars over my lifetime and have never had a problem.

My ex-bf. Practically GAVE it to him, but I figured because he helped pay for it, did all the work it ever needed on it, (he's a mechanic, and a good one) and he liked 4-wheeling.....it was a Wrangler, he was happy to take it from me.

I didn't  :-X Plan is to ship it after I graduate.

I told my mum to sell it but she refuses. I love it still, so no protest here.

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.

I had some similar questions a little while ago - check out this thread http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=22360.0

There is some information there about using CarMax and how long it took people to get rid of their cars.

I first posted my car on craigslist.com, but I didn't get an legitimate buyers.  So, I put it in the Washington Post over 3 days and I got asking price with the second person who came to look at it!  I was living in Northern Virgina.

For one car, I made-up a nice flyer with color photos and asked my mechanic if he'd post it in his shop, which he did.  He helped me sell it to another of his customers who liked cars by that manufacturer.  The guy wanted to buy it without even seeing it, just on the word of the mechanic.  He bought it for full asking price within a week.

My other car was a lease, and unfortunately I had to take a huge hit by turning it in early because no one would take over the lease, since it was a gas-guzzler.   :(

Advertised it in two local newspapers and had signs on it, but no offers.  Just before I left I gave my Mom power of attorney for it and eventually sold it to my Uncle for less than it was worth (grrrr) for my cousin to use.  Having Mom handle the paperwork was a breeze (she made payments out of the money they were giving us for the honeymoon until Uncle Jim paid her the $5k and then she took care of getting the title from the bank once it was paid off etc.).
