well i met my husband one night when i'd had way to much to drink in New Orleans.  He left my room the next day, was a cutie, but thought i'd never see him again.

That is how we met...but in NYC and I was the one who had too much.  We met and stayed up all night.  13 hours later I left the city and thought I'd never see him again.  I new I loved him then, but after a few weeks of talking everyday, emailing and texting - I new I would spend the rest of my life with him.  I do think you get to know a person better.  We HAD to talk...it wasn't like we could go to a movie or do anything together.  We had our first official date 3 weeks after we met and had already fallen in love.

Personally - I give those of you that met on-line a HUGE amount of credit.  I used to have a big trust issue and could never have done it.

oh - to answer your question...yes.  I do think it's possible and quite romantic. :)

So, what do you do when you 'meet' someone online, and have deep, meaningful, soulful letters, emails, IMs and phone calls...  but when you finally meet him in real life he has got foul breath, terrible BO, fungal feet, filthy fingernails, lice in their hair, and kids by 3 different women?

Are you still 'in love'?

Well obviously there needs to be trust.  So if the person misrepresented himself online (like if said he was clean, well-groomed, and a virgin, or something), then that will change things, of course!  It'll take away any trust that was there, and that's always an absolute must in any long distance relationship, whether it began online or elsewhere.

I've met people on line who I thought were great and we got on brilliantly...and then when we finally met there was just no spark.  I think it is a good idea to prepare yourself for the possibility that people have a slightly different 'on line' personality, not because they are devious, but because, as has been said, they might be more relaxed, or take more care over what they say.

I met my now hubby online and fell in love with him over the course of a few weeks.  We both talked about it, it was weird that we could have this connection so fast without ever having spoken.  After the first phone call it was all over with.  We wrote and IM'd everyday, phone calls as much as we could afford and after the first visit, we never looked back.  It was never a question for us that we were going to get married.  Neither of us had ever felt so close to anyone before.

I absolutely think you can fall in love with someone through letters or email, but i know how lucky i am that i could trust him and i did take a huge risk in flying half-way around the world to meet someone for the first time.  Looking back, i sometimes can't believe i did it, but it was the best thing i ever did.

No, no I don't believe so.  I truly don't.  Sorry if that offends some, but it's my opinion that you need to physically meet someone and spend time in their company to have a relationship which involves actual love.

I personally think it's different for everyone.  Some people might be able to, others might need time in person.  The only thing I'm really a skeptic about is "love at first sight."  I tend to think that you need to at least know a bit about the person in order to love him/her.  Whether that knowledge comes through letters or through spending time in person...I really think that's an individual thing.  For me...I knew I loved him before we met in person, but meeting made it become a deeper kind of love, if that makes sense...

I agree - I think it's more like "lust at first sight."

To use your own words -- I personally think it's different for everyone. Some people might be able to fall in love at first sight, others might need time in person. Just like some people need time and experience to have good judgment, and others have a finer-tuned intuition which allows them to base more decisions on foresight. Neither way is better; you just have to know the risks you are willing to take and what(who) you are willing to trust.

Time makes a relationship, but you really have very little control over who and how you love. I knew (and by knowing, loved) my SO from the very moment I saw him (and vice versa). It's just the way  we are and who we are. There is an inherent familiarity between us that has always been there.

I understand if it's difficult to believe or accept; I never considered that such an intimacy was possible between two people. We're both very realistic and logically-minded people. But we also cannot deny our own experience. We definitely Knew each other (and thus fell in love) at first sight. It wouldn't have mattered where or how we met (online or off), and just because it is a visually-based judgment does not make it lust. Most of lust is smell-based anyway.  8)  ;D

Absolutely, unequivocally, YES.

People used to court and fall in love by writing letters all the time in "the old days". It's no different now. Hearing their voice on the phone really helps, though, and I would suggest that at some point if you haven't already.

I don't disagree with you, in fact I completely understand what you are saying because I have to explain it all the time.  I fell in love with my bf the night we met, but not the second I saw his face for the first time.  I might be too literal.  I just think it's a physical attraction at first sight or lust and not love.  I fell in love the night we met, but that love grew after we communicated more through calls and emails.
sorry off topic.

I recently had this conversation with my grandmother, she's 91.  She was telling me how my grandfather would send her letters during their courtship and her father would have to read them first!  Can you imagine?!  Unfortunately, she didn't keep any - I would have loved to see them.
