Where do you find your next read?

I've always been curious about how people choose the books they read.

I use a couple of sources. I generally try to read most of the Booker Prize short list each year and I'm a rather slow reader so by the time they come out in paperback it usually fills up my summer. I also ask friends who have similar tastes. And I read reviews in the paper.

I get a lot of great recommendations from Oprah's book club list and also the Reading Room section in her O magazine.  I also like to check out what's on display in the book stores...those usually turn out to be good!

I usually go on word of mouth or in various magazines, the book review section I often keep note of the titles which interest me.  I use Amazon too as they always recommend books which other people have bought to the one you are viewing.  Oprah is a good place to find new books and of course I look at what other people are reading in the Reading room - and my list keeps on getting longer and longer.  So I doubt I will ever run out of books  :D

I make use of an afternoon by trawling the bookshelves at a couple different bookstores. The Oxfam bookstore in Reading is really fantastic and I find loads of books there. I also scan the shelves at Fopp, but I also usually try to read some of the Booker books and the Pulitzer books as well.
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

My DH is usually better at picking my books than i am... i usually let him buy them.
But lately, some of his choices have been... a bit suspect.   So i've been browsing Amazon's recommendations.   They recommend based on previous choices you've made, so some of them are quite good suggestions.

Osmosis.

Book reviews I happen to see in the papers, browsing in a book shop, aimless web-surfing, Amazon. Those are for the books I buy myself. But two of my friends and I all love mystery thrillers and we pass them on to each other when we finish what we're reading. So a lot of the time I haven't picked out my next book, it's just been passed on. I really like that we do this, it means we are never without something interesting and good to read. :)

I just tend to stroll around the bookstore, looking for something that interests me.

Recommendations from friends and family.  Browsing bookstores.  I read so much on the commute to and from work, that I will read just about anything some one gives me.  I now live across from a library and have been meaning to check that out as my bookshelves are getting a bit too crowded.

My book almost doubled when I moved in with my husband (my books + his books), so I've still got to get through all of his books (minus the ones that we've both read). Charity shops are also a great place to find books.

If you're asking how I choose which books to read, I just look for interesting titles/blurbs or authors that I like, then read a few pages and see if the book seems interesting. I don't like to make decisions based on other people's opinions.

Everywhere.  Book reviews, wandering through bookshops, word of mouth... everything.  When I can't find anything good, I go back to my old bookshop and ask my former manager for a recommendation.  We have similar tastes and - no exaggeration - the man reads everything.

Charity shops.  Almost exclusively.  I let the book chose me rather than the other way round most of the time.

That's how I usually buy wine.  Haven't had a bad bottle yet.... ;)
