When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Nigella does one that dh always requests - it's a chocolate malt cake complete with Malteasers for decoration! I think it's in her How To Eat cookbook.

First of all, Happy Birthday on Saturday!  And secondly, I'm really boring with cakes, I like them plain, so I'd go with red velvet because most of my friends really like it.

Dont think so... think you will have to make it.
I have no idea what it is... never heard of it until a couple of years ago here on UKY!

Red Velvet Cake is VERY yummy and very popular in the South.

I'm just confused on why you have to bake your own b-day cake?  Someone should be doing this for you!  :)

I'm a big fan of Victoria Sponge Cake (of course)...with buttercream icing and raspberry jam.  I always bake one for my birthday, for my friends birthdays...any old excuse really.

Are you kidding?  I insist on baking my own cakes....that way I can ensure it's quality stuff....and I can lick the bowl!  :D

I'd vote for devil's food with chocolate/sour cream frosting.  I make one of those at least 10 times a year!

Ooh, or a courting cake -- just made one for DH's birthday and it was lovely -- perfect summery cake!  http://www.britannia.com/cooking/recipes/courtingcake.html

My absolute fave cake is tunnel of fudge. My mom would bake it on very special occasions. We would get it maybe once or twice a year. Usually on my dad's birthday. Totally yummy.
