ditto in my Tesco - the fake stuff at least.
Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

I don't know why chucking in extra baking powder works it just does...

Perhaps it is not the baking powder but the flour needing more leavening?

I've realy noticed this with corn breads too... I need to chuck in more than the US recipe calls for... also.. might have to do if you are using UK teaspoons or USA teaspoons. I use US for US recipes.. well all of them to  be honest as I have no UK teaspoons.

Finally found buttermilk at Sainsburys so we had yummy pancakes this morning!  yay!  ;D

(and the recipe for buttermilk in my Joy of Cooking book said to add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda, they were more fluffy too, just how I like them!)

Ok, I'm reviving this old post- I hope that's ok.

I tried making pancakes this morning and they were CRAP!!  I've made pancakes before but this time I used a new recipe.  It called for 30 grams of baking powder.  I thought that was a bit much but hell that's what it said.  Well the afterburn (that's the only way I can describe the weird burning after taste that I can only think came from baking power overdose) was a bit intense and I'm pissed off!!  What a waste.

So after reading all this posts and all the suggestions I'm going to try again tomorrow morning.  Wish me luck!!

May I hijack for a moment? I just read (in an American cooking mag, no less) that double acting baking powder ONLY means that it reacts to both heat and... crap, what was the other thing... liquid? Anyway, it says it has nothing to do with the strength.

So why do some people suggest doubling the baking powder here in American recipes? I'm so confused!  :P
I agree with you! :-\\\\

I use the same amount of baking powder and haven't had any problems. I do find I need a bit more flour.

But too bad the only kind of syrup you can find is "authentic" maple, and it costs an arm and a leg!

But it is SO good!!!!

I have an unopned bottle of Smucker's Breakfast Syrup (light) that I brought from the US.  I won't be needing anymore so I any of you would like to have, just let me know!

Jenn, I don't know if you have an Asda near you but it is the only place I can find buttermilk around here.

Did you sift the flour?  Maybe try that next time? Sifting makes cakes lighter so I would assume it does the same to pancakes.  I have admit though, I've never made pancakes from scratch.

I dont bother trying to find buttermilk, cos Asda are the only ones who stock it, and it's too far to travel on a regular basis.

I just use a mixture of soured cream and regular milk.    :)

Do you make american style pancakes here?  No I dont mean with the Krustyz that your family sent you in a care package!  I mean with flour, sugar, eggs and butter?  I tried to make them this weekend, they were lumpy and came out like crapes.  Any advice or something else I can try?  I used the recipe from Joy of Cooking, my bible cookbook.

I miss pancakes.....fluffy ones! :-\\\\

When I was in England I tried making them from scratch and it didn't turn out well.  Then tried Bisquick, but then the Tesco stopped carrying it.  So, I would either order mix frpm Skyco or wait for care packages from home.
