Choosing names for the baby
« on: January 16, 2004, 01:36:24 PM »
I'm only into my 6th week but we are already doing the name thing. We are doing well at finding girls names we like and can even agree on but when it comes to boys names Stu and I just cannot seem to agree.  I'm just wondering how you other preggy people are getting on choosing names and for those already with kids how did you decide??

Our little boy is Philip Andrew.

Philip is the name of my husband David's twin brother. Philip has spina bifida and has already lived past when his doctors told him he would, and won't ever have children even though he's broody and has always wanted that. So we're naming our son after him. It's the sweetest thing ever to have both of these men, husband & his twin, brooding over me and taking care of me.
:)

Andrew is the name of my little brother, the one that performed me & David's American wedding ceremony, and he just means the world to me. We thought since we were already going with a brother theme we might as well keep it up. :)

Plus we thought Philip Andrew sounded really nice. We like traditional names. We used his name in conversation for about a week, just between us, to see if we really liked it, and then told everyone. I've really enjoyed telling everyone his name, and knowing it myself, because I feel like I've bonded more with him. He's not just an unnamed baby, he is my son, Philip Andrew. I've totally loved it. We didn't care if anyone didn't like it, we're not the kind of people to make up our minds based on what they think.

I delusionally named my oldest (first name only) after my father - thinking for some reason that I just should since he was the first grandchild.  Oh well.

My youngest just *looked* like his name.  I had a list of 5 names when I went into the hospital and he didn't look like any of them!  So I spent 2 days trying to name him, much to the frustration of the Records Clerk who kept calling me for a name to put on the birth certificate!  (One of the nurses kept on about naming him Mark Anthony...um, no!)

Anyway, their names are Martin Robert (oldest) and Charles Richard (youngest).  Robert just sounded nice and Richard is after my uncle.  Nice normal regular names with acceptable nicknames if desired.  But neither one of them uses a nickname.  I also figure these names will look good on an office door or a business card some day!   ;)

But I was willing to be more creative with a girl if I'd had one.  My two top names were Dagny (from Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand) and Tierney (after the actress Gene Tierney).  Now it would probably be Lillian Irene after Phil's mother and my grandmother.

But we're NOT going there!  :o

You all have good stories and good reasons for choosing names ............ if there weren't so many family feuds on my side we'd be OK with using names already in the family but I don't wanna upset anyone!

For a girl we are thinking Stella or Violet we both agree on those no problem - although it is a massive joke that Stu's fave beer is Stella - that is not the reason we like it!

For a boy, Stu really likes Owen and I really DON'T like it! I like Finn, Stu is OK with it but he keeps finding others he likes better. We also thought maybe Cal (since Stu is from California).

Also as I am half Persian we are thinking of a Persian middle name (like my brother and I) so they will have a reminder of their heritage.

No doubt this will all change with the next baby name book we look at ...

Can I play?!
I named my daughter, Jessica Jane, after her great grandparents on her mothers side (that would be me)  [smiley=blush.gif]
Jessica, after my dads mother and Jane, after my moms mother.
We had a HECK of a time on agreeing on our sons name! He has some random-generic name! Poor thing.

My sons aren't named after anyone. I just liked the names. The oldest hates his name and tells me how awful I was to call him that. ::) His name is Alexander Miles and we call him Miles. My youngest is Nicholas Adam and he just goes by Nick. If I was to have a daughter her middle name would HAVE to be Marie because I'm already the 4th generation with that name (it probably goes back even further but I don't know) and I'd like to think it won't end with me. My son already said if he has a daughter he's going to call her Marie. :)

Stephen chose Dagmar.  I hated it at first (he told me before I was even pg that he loved the name) and told him no.  But it did grow on me.  First I stopped hating it, then I started kinda liking it.  I wanted to name her Ava May, Ava for Ava gardner and May for the female lead in my favorite novel The Caine Mutiny.
So I let him have Dagmar and I chose her middle name, Selina, after Catwoman.  Cuz I like Catwoman and I think Selina is pretty.
We had Virgil picked out as a boy's name, and still like it, but now I don't know if I want to use it if we get a boy next time.  It's like it's Dagmar's name and we don't want to use it elsewhere.  I like Henry but Stephen doesn't.  I like Richard but Stephen doesn't.  I like Arthur but Stephen doesn't. We get into these silly conversations where we end up with stuff like "Drunken Loser".
I think because I gave in on Dagmar, though, I'm going to make him let me choose the boy's name, and I'll name him after any King I want!  (Unlike some, that's exactly here I'm getting the names from.  Henry II, Richard III, Arthur.  ;D  Hubby thinks I'm insane.)

Before we knew Philip's gender we called him Brio, short for "embryo", since we didn't like saying "it"... we thought for a long time he'd end up just being called Brio forever since we couldn't agree on anything!

Oooh ooh, can I play?
Our oldest is Emily.  After the Pink Floyd song 'See Emily Play'.  When she was little she thought that was really dorky, but now she thinks it's cool.  I wanted to name her Nora, but James was horrified-and now that I've lived in England fourteen years I understand the connection.  Everyone would call her 'Nora Batty' or 'Flamin' Nora.' ;)
Elizabeth is a family name on both sides of our family.  We chose it because we really couldn't agree on anything.  I wanted Abby and I can't remember what James wanted-Stevie I think.  I wish now we'd gone with Stevie.  But already having a girl, I thought people would think we really wanted a boy.
Molly's name was chosen by all four of us (me, James, Emily and Lizzy) making lists of the names that we liked-and Molly was the one name on everybody's list.  I really wanted Pheobe or Ruby.
We never actually chose boys names-I think we knew deep down that they were girls.  James wanted to name Emily Lowell if she was a boy (yikes) but she probably would have been Jack.  We were probably going to name Lizzy Ned(it was pre-Simpsons so that would have been a mistake) and we were almost positive that Molly was going to be Ralph.  I think it's a good thing we had girls.    ::) ;)

Since Mindy's playing - me too!

The oldest is Candra.  At the time, all the baby name books said it was Latin for moon.  Now they say it means shining or something like that.  There's a bit more story to her name than me just picking it out of a book, but it would take a book to explain it here, but for the simple explanation, got it from a baby name book.  Middle name Olin, also from a book and just as much story behind that name as well.  She was my one weird baby name although at 16 can't really tell it's all that weird.  It's just her name now, you know?

Daughter no. 2 is Josephine - so named after my great grandmother Josephine and because I really liked the name.  I think it sounds so feminine and pretty.  Middle name Alexandria because that's what the ex picked.

Daughter no. 3 is Olivia.  It wasn't meant for her to be named after my grandfather, but it sorted of ended up being that way.  His name was Oliver and he died while I was pregnant with her.  her middle name is Foster, which was my mil's maiden name.  The irony is that the mil's father died during my pregnancy as well so it was sort of a tribute to both great grandfathers who had passed.

Selina is supposed to mean Moon as well, and Dagmar means Glorious!

And for years I wanted to name a baby girl Josephine.  I think they're all pretty.

All the names above sound really nice!

My sons name is Christopher Tyler.
He was born in 85'...this was before the name Tyler started getting popular. We never knew another Tyler, not even at his school.
Yet somehow his dad later remarried a woman who named her child Tyler too! And they are the same age.   ::)

I'm not pregnant yet,just thinking ahead  ;)
I need some honest opinions here...so be truthful.

What do you think about the name Benjamin Reece Gerhard Riemann?

Gerhard is my husbands name from many generations...it is a must he says.  Reece is my fathers middle name.
And Benjamin...well we both agree we like it.

Guess we'd call him Ben Riemann, although I love the name Reese!
But how does Reese Riemann sound?
(last name pronounced Ree-man.)

Any first impressions on the name Ben?
I really want a name that says >masculine-kind-intelligent-outgoing-fun loving.
Do Ben and or Reese fit that description ya think?

thx!
