Haunted castles in UK
« on: June 27, 2006, 12:34:36 PM »
Dale & myself are into the paranormal. We decided for our UK trip we want to take a tour of well known haunted castles. We already decided Tower of London will be one of them. Does anyone else know of any?

Try this site.  I found a lot of info about ghost walks and hauntings.

My daughter is totally into the macabre and we go on a ghost walk whenever we visit a city.  We're saving the London one for winter though.  It has to be in the dark.

Berry Pomeroy is down here in South Devon and it is, supposedly, one of the most haunted castles in the country.  Although, I imagine most places try to claim that!  But it is a really pretty area!

Here's a few I've heard of (I'm really into haunted places, that sort of thing, too):

And that's just a few of the many, what with the reputation England has for being one of the most haunted places in the world.

Chillingham Castle in Northumberland is meant to be very spooky.  A local radio host does a Hallowe'en special every years and stick a bunch of listeners in various haunted locations across the North East.

If you go to www.metroradio.co.uk and check under Alan Robson, something maybe listed there.  I know when my DF becomes DH he wants me to go, but I scare far too easily!

We already decided Tower of London will be one of them.

I just requested free tickets for the nightly Ceremony of the Keys. It says request two months in advance but it might just be worth a shot if it is short notice anyways. This would be an awesome experience if you are hoping for the paranormal!

DH and I did this last fall with some guests from Chicago - it was a really neat experience and yes a bit spooky.  Although I am guessing since it is so light here late in the evening it won't be quite as scary in the summer.  Anyway you really get a cool insiders' view of the Tower and it is really interesting to think this ceremony occurs EVERY NIGHT....I recommend it if you can get tickets!

I got tickets for late August so late September should be cake! I gave 3 dates and got my first choice and the tickets were received in two days after I posted the letter on a Sunday even!

Get on up to Edinburgh...one of the most haunted cities around!!!  :o
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

We went to Colchester castle awhile ago,its not too haunted, caught a couple orbs on film but nothing too spooky. I'd love to go on tours where you can go explore yourself instead of being in a tourguide group. I feel so restricted in those!!!

Will add Edinburgh to the list as well! thanks!

One of my kids went through a 'ghost phase' a few years ago.   :)  The Good Ghost Guide is a really great book that lists many of the known ghosts in the UK in a travel book kind of way.  It's really cool.

Well, here's expat's famous ghost story.  See, Expat didn't 'believe' in ghosts.  For a long, long time.  29 years, in fact.  Then one November Expat and her mom got a Britrail pass and came to the UK for a three-week holiday between Expat's temp gigs.

By the time we got to Scotland, we were grating on each other's nerves, so when we got to Stirling Castle, we decided to split up, tour separately and meet after 2.5 hours at the gates.

About 3.30-4PM, I saw a stairway that went down instead of up.  I thought that was kind of cool, so I started down.

And felt weird about it.

So I went back up, but then chided myself about feeling weird and went down.

Turned out it was a tower, b/c Stirling's on a high hill.

There were all sorts of empy chambers and windy stairways, so I kept going.

Then found myself in a chamber and couldn't quite remember which way was out.

K, so it's starting to going pretty dark, too, and it's pretty cold.  Not going to panic, I'm a seasoned outdoorswoman.

I turned around, and saw a man standing about 20 feet away.

He looks VERY solid, like a normal person, wearing Jacobite dress, but all the employees were.

So I asked him the way out and he starts walking.  A bit fast, I was panting to keep up.

He went up a flight of stairs and when I got there, I found a long hall just off it on hte right, and a door at the end which was shut.  I thought he'd gone in there and it was private, but I saw daylight and another stair and knew I could get out.

So I went out and to the gates to have a cigarette and wait for my mom.

Whilst smoking, a lovely employee came up to share a fag and he asked how my visit went.  I told him it was lovely and about hte man in the tower.

He seemed very interested in this man and asked me to describe his clothes, his features, etc.

Then he told me that man was the ghost of a Jacobite rebel who'd been executed and he hadn't been seen in a couple of years.

I thought he was having a laugh, and anyhow my mom showed up so we thanked him and got in our coach for Edinburgh.

A while later, safe on my couch in Denver, TLC featured a show about haunted places.

Cool!  Only they featured a segment on the man in Stirling Castle.

 :o

Holy s*&$!  Talk about feeling like I'd had a bucket of ice water thrown over me!

I believed after that!

Expat, that is one of the coolest things I've ever heard.  I envy you your experience!
