Am I just a lazy sack of sh!t???
« on: January 11, 2007, 12:25:14 PM »
I joined the gym last week because like a lot of us I want to lose some weight.  I had my orientation last friday.  I couldn't walk for 2 days afterwards!! So today I went to the gym on my own for the first time.  I should have done;
eliptical trainer 10 min warm up
rower 2000 meter/12 minutes
eliptical 25 minutes
chin up 3 sets/12
lunges 3 sets/12
squats 3 sets/12
chest press 3 sets/12
and another that I can't think of the name (w/ dumbells) 3 sets/12

All I did was;
eliptical trainer 10 min warm up
rower 2000 meter/12 minutes

So now instead of chearing myself on because I went to the gym I'm beating myself up for not doing the entire workout.  I was there for a total of 22 work out minutes!!  How pathetic am I!!!

Oh well I'm going tomorrow so here's to hoping I do more than I did today!!  Baby steps!!

No...you are not a lazy sack....You are normal.  Getting into a routine at the gym is hard. I do the same thing about 3-4 times a year.  The first week is always tough.  Set your expectations lower for this week with the aim of getting through the whole routine by end of next week.  Once you do it once, you will want to keep doing the whole thing.  But trust me...you will have days where the 10 minute warm up and one set of each excercise is all you can stomach.  Something's always better than nothing.

Good luck!

No def. not a lazy sack..

I found on days I was not in the mood, I'd do a quick warm up and then do weights.  After the weights, I'd go back and do cardio.  For me, that worked much better because I found that the cardio wore me out and then I didn't feel like doing the weights.

Now, I'm trying to fit in two 1-hour long walks per week!   Some days, I feel like a lazy sack!  and flabby one at that!

Hey - you went and that is the first step. If I started back to the gym right now I could not do all that the first time. Don't beat yourself up, just ease back into the routine of working out. I'll bet it won't take long before you are doing the whole routine. You have the motiviation to actually go - that is a lot in my book! ;D

Don't beat yourself up!  :)

That does seem like a pretty heavy workout if you are just starting out, or coming back to the gym after a while (I could be wrong here, but that is what I'm gathering). Maybe you want to try breaking up the strength training to different days until you get back into it a bit more. For example, do all of your lower body (squats and lunges) one day, and the upper body stuff on another day.

naw when you first start out a routine it's hard to get used to but then gradually it works up your motivation (and hormones) so by the end of the 2nd-3rd week you'll be craving to do more!

start slow and gradual. Good luck ;D

I agree with Kate (and so does DB, whose degree is in Sports science--just ran it by him for an opinion).  Your beginning workout seems a bit much.  Definitely divide it up.  He suggested to do cardio days and weight days (with a 15 minute warm-up).  Otherwise, he said you will make your body too tired and too sore, which will only discourage you.  I am sure you will get there.  Don't beat yourself up!

I just started back this week and am focusing on cardio for the time being.  So, I know how you feel.  I was a bit discouraged my first day back when I could barely get through my cardio.  However, the second day, I flew through it!  Eventually, DB will write a weight program for me which will focus on my sport of choice, rockclimbing.

Good luck!  PM if you want and we can exchange work out woes!

Just wanted to add that regardless of how much you get through at the gym, remember to take the time to stretch before you leave. That will help a lot with the soreness.

Good for you for going!!  I think you did great!!

I have about 15 more pounds to go of baby weight and AM lazy sack!!  I haven't joined a gym and  don't think I will anytime soon!  I'd like to, but I don't have anyone to watch Finnian at this time.  I've been meaning to do some weights at home, but that hasn't happened  yet!

Good job Lindyloo!!! :)

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's hard going from doing not much to going full steam ahead. You wouldn't want to start full on anyway because you'll wear yourself out. Work yourself into it...you'll do great.

I workout quite a bit and that regime you describe would be really tough for me. 3 sets of 12 on all those squats and lunges! I agree that you are probably planning too much for a beginner and should just do what you can do. You will get stronger--there's no doubt about that!

New York New York and all other moms.  Check for gyms that have a creche (sp?).  I know mine does in the suburbs of London.  I also heard about this new thing called Power Pramming in london parks recently.  It sounded like a good way to get excercise and get out of the house with your kids.  Assuming your kids are still young enough to be in a pram.

First day back at the gym yesterday!  I went swimming.  Not a ton, but enough to be out of breath and a little tired.

The Power Pramming sounds great!  I'm in Abingdon, so doubt they have it here, but I could see if I could get some local NCTers interested.  Finnian is 4 months and just 1 month out of neurosurgery.  I'm sure it would be fine to put him in a creche, but I'm still a bit nervous about it...  Guess I'll have to continue lazy sackdom until I can get up my courage!

For those of you that had C-sections (sorry, don't want to turn this into a Pregnancy and Parenting thread!), when did you do situps again?  I tried to do one the other day holding Finnina (granted, he's a 16lb. weight!) and boy did that not feel good!!!!
