Just posted this in "Happiness is..." but I had to share here too...

"FINALLY finding a cheese that tastes (almost) like my favorite cheese in the whole wide world (Kroger-brand medium cheddar cheese)!"

(For the curious: Red Leicester.  Yes, I'm a plebe.  ;D)

 ;D ;D ;D

OMG!  I understood the Kroger cheese reference!  Their cheddar was always so good!  Are you from Texas?!

Nope, Georgia. :)  When I lived in Boston, though, the only person who truly understood my pain was my friend Carrie, who lived in Houston!

I am ridiculously picky about dairy products (mostly because I'm lactose intolerant, so something's got to taste pretty darned good for me to go to all that trouble), and I miss Kroger's medium cheddar and their cottage cheese so badly.  But the Red Leicester is a start!

I like Red Leicester and some of the milder cheddars.

But how I miss Monterey Jack!!!

Where are you?  DF managed to convince a (semi-)local cheese shop to special-order a half-wheel of Jack for us, but we've only bought a quarter of it so far!  The cheese shop is in Darlington....

smoked gouda

That's so funny! I just saw this thread and  was going to post that I just "found" smoked gouda. Yummy!!! Great with a bit of grainy mustard with lettuce on granary bread. Have had it for lunch all week. Mmmmm!

I love cheese, period!  So does BF!  He brought something wonderful from Amsterdam the last time he was over.  Divine!  But, my favorites are cheddar, guoda, Jack, and that Kroger Medium Cheddar.  I live in Boston at the moment so I can't go get it.  :(

But, I will be in England in less than a month.  Mmmmm, cheese....

This thread is so dangerous.  ;)

If you have a big Sainsburys near you check out their cheese counter.  They stock a Monterey Jack that is made in Wales.

When I lived in Boston (2002-2005), and would fly home to visit my folks in Georgia, I used to bring Kroger medium cheddar back with me!  I stuck a few blocks in the freezer for a couple of hours, then wrapped each brick in foil and threw them in my carry-on with a couple of frozen water bottles.  I wasn't sure the first time I did it that they'd make it there unscathed, but even the two hour drive, two hours at the airport, three hours on the plane and hour and a half T ride home couldn't stop the power of Kroger cheddar!

I tried that monterey jack and was really disappointed by it. I thought maybe it was me and when I was home over Christmas I tried the US version and it was much better to me. The monterey jack at Sainsbury's was really bland and flavorless. I know monterey jack is hardly a punchy cheese, but it certainly has flavor!

I don't see Monterrey Jack at Sainsburys anymore, but I have seen it at Tesco.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

We were in charge of the Cheese Course for Christmas this year and we went to this tiny little shop in Teddington.  We spent so much but got a beautiful variety!  I can't remember the name...I'll ask BF.  They didn't have any Monterey Jack, but loads of beautiful cheeses.  My mouth is watering just thinking about it.  The shopkeeper was so sweet and let me sample everything I asked...I was in heaven.  This is probably how we ended up with 8 cheeses.   ;D

A local cheesemaker has a 12-year cheddar that is so full of crystals, it's practically crunchy!  Mmm......

As much as i like cheese, i guess i'm a cheese novice. What is the deal with the crystals?  I've never seen cheese like that here in the US and can't remember seeing in during the times i was in the UK.

I bought an aged gouda from a wine and cheese shop in Baltimore that was fantastic. It was so crystally it was almost like candy. Tristessa, I don't know what makes the crystals, but they're delicious!

I believe the crystals are calcium. You get them in mature cheeses for some reason, something to do with the aging process.
