Recommended "Self-Cleaning" Cat litter boxes...
« on: March 20, 2007, 10:13:28 AM »
My future hubbie and I are wanting to get a self-cleaning cat litter box for our two kits.

I was just wondering if someone had a recommended brand that works well and what kind of litter do you use for it?

I was looking at the omega paw brand

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Omega-Self-Cleaning-Cat-Litter-Box-Regular-Free-Ship_W0QQitemZ150101545463QQcategoryZ29853QQssPageNameZWD2VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item150101545463

but it seems to come from the states, so I am wondering where else this can be found, or something similar. :-\\\\

Thanks a bunch!

We've been thinking of getting a couple of those (we have two cats) ourselves, but have yet to find any that are guaranteed to work. Please let me know if you do.

I have two of these litter boxes and love them, but they are not "self cleaning" like the LitterMaid boxes that actually rake the litter for you when the cat leaves the box.  The OmegaPaw littler boxes need to be rolled over on their side and upside down, then you pull the little drawer out and it has all the waste in the drawer.  Also, depending on the size of your cat, they may be too small.  So, if you have a large cat, be sure to get the one specified for multiple cats.
If you really want a self cleaning litter box that cleans itself eachtime it senses the cat has used it,  go with the LitterMaid.
Dr. Foster and Smith (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/) can ship to the UK, it looks like. You have to call to get a shipping quote though...

I know this is an old thread, but I'd like to know if anyone has experience with a Littermaid litter tray. They weren't available in the UK the last time I checked, but they are now and we're considering getting one. What's your experience? Are they worth the money? Do you recommend the larger size? What are the drawbacks? How much maintenance is required?

I LOVED mine.  I hate cleaning the litter box and the litter maid was a God-send.

If you have a place for it, I'd do it in a second (and if I had the 110 quid to spend!)

I'd like to get one for the new mystery kitty that we should be adopting later this year.  But my grandmother got a LitterMaid for my adult cats when we lived with her, and they were both terrified to use it!  It seemed the motor would start while they were still in the box and it scared the crap out of them! (ok pun intended) Maybe their technology has improved since then, those were pretty new at the time.  Has anyone else had a scaredy-cat?

I use the scoop free box and LOVE it http://www.scoopfree.com/.  I have no idea if they are sold in the UK though.

Litter robot! We have 3 cats and all I have to do is take out the bag about once a week.
They're expensive but worth it.

I need to buy what PetPlanet stocks, though, and they only sell LitterMaid. I have a £500 voucher there!  ;D

My experience with the LitterMaid was the the rakes would gum up.  I hated cleaning those more than I hated cleaning the box.  Also, you need to buy these special receptacles for the poop to go in.  I got mine for free, but gave it to a friend.  She now has the Litter Robot and swears by it!

That litter robot looks awesome - really expensive, though.  Will have to convince DH...

Which model of LitterMaid did you have? Do you remember?

The Litter Robot recommendations are great... but the only one that's an option for me is the LitterMaid.

Does anyone else have anything to add about the LitterMaid?

My parents use the Littermaid and love it. Some of the cats were afraid of them at first though, so I don't know if this is feasible for you - but maybe keep the old litterbox available until you notice them using the Littermaid one (if they seem scared/hesitant)?
