Yes it is definitly a relief. I've prepared a binder with all my documentation in case I get asked tough questions from customs.

Also, I didn't include my diploma or proof of qualifications they called me and asked what my qualifications were and then approved me. I completely blanked on including that. I plan to obtain another copy of my transcript while in Texas.

I leave in 3 days. Everythings packed and shipped except carry on luggage. We're going to Texas to New Orleans to DC to the UK. Yes, I do like the Amazing Race.

Wow! That's one crazy schedule! Have fun, be safe, and be sure to let us know how things go!

Just to be pedantic, it will be Immigration, not Customs, who may ask you about your intentions.  Customs will be more interested in weapons, booze and wads of cash.  But interestingly, the Prime Minister has proposed a new force which will combine the two:

I'm almost ready to send off my stuff.  I'm just waiting for my wife's new passport to get here.
The application (on page 2) asks if my spouse will be traveling on my passport or her own.  I didn't know that she could travel on mine or even what that means?
If she does, do we have to pay for 2 application fees?

I was going to take a sharpie and blackout the account numbers on my bank statements and savings account statements to protect my identity a little in case of loss or theft of my documents.  Do you think that's a bad idea?

It just seems a little risky to hand my entire identity over to someone in a nice little package.

In some countries your spouse (usually I suspect, a wife rather than a husband) can be added to your passport, rather than have their own passport.  So they can travel with you, but not on their own.

I seem to remember that when I was very small (like late 60s) my dad's passport had a space for a wife.

I have been remiss in writing about my experience, as I got caught up in the hysteria which moving across the ocean can be.  Here is how my timeline looked:

filled out application on-line at UKVisas, sent with payment on June 19
fedex'd package to NY consulate on June 22(Friday) my orientation starts on Sept 24, and is so stated in my fee statement
Rcd' email morning of June 25(Monday)
Then, nothing....
Finally, on July 10, I got a call from a lady at the Consulate to schedule an interview for the next day over the phone.  I did not sleep that night...
Next day, same lady calls from Consulate.  asks me questions that are on the application, so luckily I had make a copy of the copy I sent to Consulate.  I was on the phone with her for 40 minutes, but my answers, like this reply, were a bit wordy...
At this point I should probably point out that my situation is not the normal student app they normally deal with.  I am a mature student going to uni in Edinburgh for a full 4 year honors course, and paying for it myself.  So there might have been a red flag, which is why it took two weeks for them to finally act on my via.  And the Independence Day holiday was smack in the middle.
The only questions she asked that were not directly from the app were concerning what I planned on doing with my degree, what my curriculum would be, and was I aware that a good deal of my savings would be used to partake on this journey.  The curriculum question was the only one that threw me, as I have not had any information from uni regarding specific courses.
When she was finished, i asked her where I stood, and she said very calmly "I am issuing your visa".  I was so relieved or in shock, I just calmly thanked her, asked about my docs and when they would be sent out. She said the next day.  I hung up the phone and ran around my apartment freaking out, certainly terrifying the cats.  That afternoon I went in and resigned from my job, and called my family(sister & brother).
Next day I received the email I had been waiting for..."your visa application has been approved" along with the Fed EX tracking #.  At least they send it priority, so it arrives the next morning and you don't have to wait all day.  When I heard the knock on the door, it was better than Ed McMahon and Publishers Clearinghouse sweepstakes(see how mature I am?). I didn't know what a visa looked like, and I thought it would be in the front of my passport. It wasn't, it was back on page 16.  It is so cool.  I look at it practically every morning.
The last few days as I count down to departure day, I am getting a bit nervous.  I am taking my cats so thing are a bit more complicated. I'm only nervous because I just want to make sure I have all my ducks in line.  To that end, this sight has been, and continues to be, immensely helpful.  It has saved me so much time, effort, and worry.
Thanks to all who have posted on subject I have viewed here.
So that's my timline, plus excessive embellishment.  Anyone who would like to meet up in Edinburgh, let me know.  If they can do it in one capital city, we can do it in th other!

Cheers,
Ric

Has anyone NOT sent their stuff yet?

I'm getting stressed because I'm waiting for a passport to be returned from being renewed.  I'm worried I won't have time left when it finally arrives. :o

Also, does anyone have advice on whether it's bad to black out my account numbers on the  supporting statements?  I've gotten a few responses from other sources...but I wanted to know from some of you who have already done this. :-\\\\

my boyfriend hasn't :/
His university wouldn't release his FASFA stuff and his confirmation of him having a place etc until he paid his £1,000 deposit, so he spent a week running around trying to find the money, it was paid this week, but the lady at the international office has now gone on holiday for 2 weeks, and no one else is available to  help whilst she's away.
So he's a bit stuck right now and running out of time before classes start...seems a bad time for a holiday really!
I don't think there's much he can do at the moment, as he needs all that info before he can apply for loans etc :/

I have never blacked out numbers on the statements and wouldn't advise doing it.  I really don't see the point.  If the government want to access your account they will, numbers or not!

I agree with Vicky. I'm no expert or anything, but you're divulging plenty more sensitive information (like your social security number, birth certificate, etc) when getting passports and all that, so a bank account number is something I wouldn't even worry about. Loads of other people haven't had any problems with the process!

(There should really be a smiley for "happy, shocked, and a little overwhelmed". )

I just got email from the LA consulate telling me my student visa's been approved and issued.

Congrats!!

I admit, I'm a little jealous.  I still haven't gotten the passport back that I'm waiting to be renewed.  Is there anything I can do about this?  We've called the number they gave us and it's all automated...we can't get the information we need.  They keep saying "you'll know when your passport has been renewed when you receive it in the mail"... ... ... well, duh!

So, Mr. Bad Example - If I don't make it over for this first term...can I borrow you notes from class when I get there? (hehe)

You can try calling your local congresscritter. My wife wound up doing that--hers has been stuck in processing since April. (Good thing she won't be traveling until November or so.) I don't know how much good they're doing, but it can't hurt.

Sure thing.  :)  If nothing else, it'll give me a chance to catch up--from what I've seen on MySpace, you're younger and in much better shape. Heh.
