Back to US
« on: May 28, 2007, 02:48:14 PM »
Hi all,

We'd like to ship our dog back to US. I just found out from a vet office that it costs £195 to get a Pet passport  :o . Is that how much it really cost to get a Pet Passport here?

The airline actually needs a Health Certificate but the vet says that they don't do health certificate for travelling pet, only a Pet Passport.

Any input would be much appreciated.

You might have better luck using the DIA web site for this kind of info. From what I hear, you only need a health certificate and a rabies vacc but check over there, too.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Wow, £195 to convert your dogs paperwork to a Passport.  That's outrageous!  It cost me £50 to have my cats converted a year and a half ago.

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/NCIE/pet-info.html

This is the place for info.  It seems you don't need a passport, just that it can help.  We don't need a passport for the cat to go to Germany from the UK, as long as we're not coming back within 6 months.

http://foreignborn.com/visas_imm/entering_us/2bringyourpet.htm

Some more info, most of which you've probably seen.  I'd stick with the USDA for the best info, though!

About the health certificate.. in Canada and Japan we got it from the vet at the airport on the day we left those countries, not from our regular vet.  The airport was the ONLY place to get that form... it may be the same here.  In both countries we had vets who were not familiar with shipping animals abroad, so I'd  double/triple-check anything a local vet says.

I didn't find a DIA site, either. Did you mean USDA?  eta:  I see what you mean, now!

Thanks so much guys...

I'll check out the DIA website. Madeira, I've gone to the USDA website and you're absolutely right that the only requirements that they need is the Rabies Cert. The Health Cert is actually required by the airline. Soooooooooo much simpler than the UK PETS scheme. So simple that I'm kinda nervous whether I'm missing anything.

I guess what I need to do is to call around the local vets surgeries and find one that's willing to produce the health certificate for a decent fee. We DONT need a PET PASSPORT just a simple Health Certificate stating that the pet is free of diseases and fit to travel ...it's pretty frustrating having to pay such a bomb for something so simple. In the US even the Pet Passport was done by my vet FREE of charge (It's all covered in my pet's insurance plan). Ohh..well...this is UK.

If any of you have any recommendation of which vet surgery that I need to go to, please let me know. I live in London.

Where in London?  Our vet is pretty good.   Stewart Halperin, 113 Chiswick High Road.  I'd also give DEFRA a call and see if they handle the health certs at the airport.

modified to delet phone #.  PM if needed!

Hey folks, I am in the same boat here with a little twist. My cats flew over to Scotland in December. Everything went very smoothly thanks to all of the help and guidance here :)

We are now going back to the US earlier than expected at the beginning of August. First question is what exactly do I need to have done for this to happen. Sounds like someone said a rabies vaccine (is this time sensitive?) and a health certificate.

The twist is, one of my cats has recently been diagnosed with Feline CRF (Chronic Renal Failure). Luckily he isn't exhibiting any symptoms other than his weight loss, and we have him on a special diet. Does anyone here have any experience traveling with a CRF animal and should I anticipate any problems?

Definitely get your health cert!  All I had when I flew out on Monday was the passport because I was told I didn't need a health cert.  Well, I missed my first flight and had to travel to Runnymead to get a vet to fill out a health cert real quick at 7:40 in the morning because they were not letting my cat travel without the cert.  What a pain in the a$$!!  It was a disastrous nightmare!

Sorry to hear about the trouble you had - but very glad to hear that you've all made it home safe and sound! :)

Thanks!  It was an emotional few hours (pregnancy hormones not helping either), but it's good to be home!

Best airline for flying BACK to the US?

Also, do they have to fly through London?
