I wouldn't want to move into that house.  EECK!!

Then again, I think our flat is haunted.  I've taken pictures and there are orbs all over..it only happens when I take pictures in our flat.  My mom says I need to dust more, but I don't think  that's it!

In Japan, agents have to tell you if there have been any suicides/murders in the houses.  They also have to disclose ghosts... and you can get great bargains on those houses!

I don't mind ghosts, but my husband refused to look at any ghost houses.  The only one I went to, by myself... was built not only on an old cemetery, but in a swamp, too.  No wonder it had bad vibes.

how, exactly, do they prove that the house does have ghosts?  ???
it's not where you're born, it's where you belong

There was actually a story here in Phoenix about a house where I think a father murdered his wife and three kids. It was apparently a very gruesome crime. The house was put on the market, and as required, the buyer was notified of the murder. Well.. unfortunately, the buyer decided to rent the house and didn't tell anyone of the murders. These other people moved in and about a month later, neighbors said something about not believing how brave they were to live in a house where 4 people were murdered. The tenants freaked out and demanded a lease break. I think they got it because of laws requiring even renters to notify potential tenants, but it was still disturbing that the guy didn't tell anyone!

Personally if I bought a house and found out later that people had be murdered there, I don't think it would bother me. I really doubt, however, that I would move into a house I already knew had a murder happen in it. Seems weird, but I guess once I already lived there and made it homey, it probably wouldn't bother me.

I don't know who certifies the ghostiness or non-ghostiness of houses... maybe  Shinto priests.  More likely just word of mouth, though.  Our house is OK, even though the suburb was built near an old execution ground.

The weird thing about it is that most Japanese people will tell you they're not superstitious and don't believe in that sort of nonsense.  But they won't buy ghost houses, and they spend a lot of money on ceremonies to pacify spirits when they build new.

Just like us, I guess. :)

What about the 4th floor? Do they still skip it when numbering the floors in buildings? Not superstitious my bum!

Yep! It's so interesting to know that cultures that emerged across the world have VERY similar superstitions sometimes. I love anthropology  [smiley=smitten.gif]

You wanna know 'really creepy?'

I went to university up in Bradford, and one of the girls in our crew had a room in one of the massive student houses right next to the campus.

The room she had turned out to be where Mr Yorkshire Ripper killed one of his victims!

I was like and you can actually sleep in here?!!

I guess over time, those atrocities kinda wane in their notoriety - but still, I was like I aint comin up to your room anymore!

still creepy 15 years later to think of that...

The house where Lizzie Borden murdered her parents is now (or was, anyway) a B&B in Fall River, Massachusetts. It's seen as a tourist attraction! I always wanted to stay there, but never did.   ;D

One of our academics moved here from Yorkshire and took a flat sight unseen in the Old Town.

She moved in yadda yadda yadda.

Couple of weeks later, she complained that her landlord must be going in when she wasn't there, as stuff was re-arranged sometimes when she got home and no sign of forced entry.  Or stuff goes missing and turns up in another place.

She phones letting agent.  Landlord lives in Dubai.

Hmmm.  Place was also ususually quiet for being located in a very busy area full of pubs with late licenses and tourists.

One morning she came in to make a cup of tea, and looked really tired.  I asked if she were all right.

She said she'd been up all night as she'd fled her flat at 3AM.

She said she awoke to hear the front door banging.

Stepped into the hall, and saw the front door (which still had the key in one of the locks), opening and slamming shut.  All on its own.

She turned on all the lights, got some gear together, and fled.

Three of us went in with her that evening to get the rest of her stuff and she stayed with a colleague till she found another flat to rent.

The landlord let her go without a peep and fully refunded her deposit!
