The murder house
« on: June 02, 2007, 06:21:48 PM »
A few months before I moved to Coventry there was a triple murder a few houses down from where my husband was living with his father. Seems a crazy guy bludgeoned to death his mother, grandmother and sister with a claw hammer. Anyway the house was empty for years and now it's on the market. Personally I wouldn't pay £100,000 for that house even if I didn't know what went on in there. But anyway I was just curious whether or not the estate agents are aware of the history of that house and if so do they have to disclose that information to any prospective buyers?

Don't have to disclose anything here that I'm aware of.  But you can always ask the other side specific questions through Request for Enquiries.  Then again, they don't have to answer and can say it's up to you as a buyer to research or do surveys.

Disclosure laws in America are getting more detailed - flood, fire, death and down to type of death and if anybody lived in the house with HIV.

HA HA HA!! Chain saws!!
In England if you have a house to sell you have to sell that house before you can buy one. (unless youre planning on renting or moving out of the area, etc.) So for example we've sold our house so we have to find a house to move into which we did but the people living in THAT house have to move out and so on... But since the people buying are house are first time buyers they are starting the chain. Since the house we want has owners moving into an EMPTY house then the chain ends. Does that make sense? So no chain means the house is empty. Wonder why.  ::)

Thanks

Now that makes understanding more clear.

I think up here, if I put an offer in and it is accepted, I am legally bound to buy it or the seller can sue me. May have changed but that's the way it used to be this side of Hadrian's Wall.

So That's the famous house...

I am really tempted to call them up on monday to ask..."Excuse me, did anyone die a horribly violent death in this house? If so, can I get a discount?

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.

It's caveat emptor as far as I'm aware here.  No disclosure laws.

None in Colorado when we left.

But some states do have it.  A long-time friend and neighbour of my folks, his mother was shot dead by her ex husband, who then shot himself to death in teh condo.  And he had to disclose when he sold it in Texas.

It's possible to find out this sort of information, however, by doing a public records search.

Could I live there?

If I had £139,000 I'd buck off to France to buy something before I bought that thing, tbh.

I'd be willing to bet that house has been sold on again and again since then and/or had tenant after tenant.

When my folks were looking for a property, well, my dad would rather die than admit it, but he seems to have inherited a sense of sight IYKWIM from his mother.  He'd just go into one and things would happen and nah, wasn't for them.  One time, he went into one and didn't even stay long.  He just kept telling my mother 'There's something wrong with this house'.  Turns out a woman had hanged herself in it a few months earlier.

Another time, they went to see one and the real estate agent wouldn't get out of the car to go into it with them.

He said he smelled cigarette smoke in it, though it was laying empty.  He went into the kitchen and a raven flew right at him.

Turns out the house had belonged to a family of 6.  The couple had 4 kids, one a daughter of 16 who had a psycho boyfriend whom she'd dumped.  He then came over, the mother let him in and he'd stabbed her to death in that kitchen.

She was a heavy smoker.

No no no...this house has been empty since the murders! It's just across from my FIL's house.

I'm the same way when it comes to houses, Expat. We looked at a lovely looking, massive house in a nearby town. The outside was gorgeous, the gardens were glorious and the entire house was renovated and the price was unbeatable! But as soon as I walked in the front door. I felt like throwing up. I went into the beautiful new kitchen and actually tasted the rotten food that had been there before. In the corner of the kitchen I sensed garbage and tons of dirty diapers. I had to leave immediately. I couldn't even go upstairs. I thought the estate agent would have thought I was a loony but she said that years ago that house was an old ex council house it was derelict for years before a builder bought it at auction. Anything could have happened there.

the price was unbeatable!

that's usually a sign, IMO.

houses give off vibes, IME.  and I don't hesitate to get out of one that doesn't give good ones.

I don't particularly like that house, but I honestly don't think I'd be put off the right house if something like that had happened in it. I'm not much of a believer in ghosts, vibes, etc. I make my own vibes!!  ;D

Haven't you ever entered a room shortly after there's been an argument and you can sense the tension? Well some people can sense that sort of tension after the people have left the room/house. I'm just that sort of person. And besides... LOL...what if something about the house made this guy crazy. Have you read the Amityville Horror?   :o ;D
