I was an 80's child, but since I was only 6 years old at the end of the decade, I didn't really know much of the music at that time (apart from Michael Jackson and Kylie Minogue). It wasn't until I went to uni and attended lots of cheesy student nights at the clubs that I got into 80's music :).

It Ain't Wot You Do (It's The Way That You Do It) - The Fun Boy Three with Bananarama

Dude that is SO a swing dance song originally!
Quote
T'ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)" is a song recorded by Fun Boy Three and Bananarama. The song was originally written in 1939 and recorded by Sy Oliver. Originally a jazz tune, it was transformed into a pop song with ska elements in 1982. It was included on Fun Boy Three's debut self-titled album, but it wasn't available on a Bananarama album until 1988's Greatest Hits Collection.

Okay here's most of my 80s playlist - sorry if some have already been mentioned:

Hazy Shade of Winter - the Bangles
Don't Be Cruel - Cheap Trick
Just Like Heaven - the Cure
Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
Break My Stride - Matthew Wilder
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
C'est La Vie - Robbie Nevil
In a Big Country - Big Country
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears
The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades - Timbuk 3
I Can't Wait - Nu Shooz
Uptown Girl - Billy Joel
The Man We All Know and Love - Kwame
The Captain of Her Heart - Double
Who Can It Be Now - Men at Work
Der Kommissar - After The Fire
Dance Hall Days - Wang Chung
You Spin Me Round - Dead or Alive
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
What I Like About You - the Romantics
99 Luftballoons - Nena
Rock This Town - Stray Cats
One Thing Leads to Another - the Fixx
Strut - Sheena Easton
Self Control - Laura Branigan
Let the Music Play - Shannon
A Little Respect - Erasure
Skankin' to the Beat - Fishbone
Hold Me Now - Thompson Twins
Electric Blue - Icehouse
Cult of Personality - Living Color
No One is to Blame - Howard Jones
Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House

Classic!!! I also enjoyed some Terrence Trent D'Arby. Yes, there was a lip-synching scandal, so I guess I liked the artist BEHIND TTD'A!

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I was SO not a rocker, but very much a child of the 80s. My list would look much like Andee's and Britwife's. Bit of a shoe gazer, me.

Smiths
Lightning Seeds
Echo & The Bunnymen
Cocteau Twins
This Mortal Coil
Cure
Love & Rockets / Tones On Tail
Bauhaus
Lloyd Cole
Pogues
Housemartins
La's
XTC
Early REM
Early U2
Joy Division
Early Tears for Fears
Chameleons
Teardrop Explodes

That morphed into early 90s shoe gazer/Thames Valley/Madchester obsession (Catherine Wheel, Slow Dive, Mazzy Star, Charlatans, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, etc.) and that morphed into a Brit Pop obsession and that morphed into a loud guitar/pretty vocal obsession (Puressence, Geneva). And pretty much nothing has moved me since. Every time I buy new music (Interpol, Editors) it just makes me sad how even talented bands are so unoriginal....

Sigh. Now I'm all nostalgic.  :)

It's not just talent they lack, it's an overall lack of originality. I'll never forget a recent (as in the last 6 years because I saw it here) interview with Boy George where they were talking about 80s fashion/looks for bands. He just sneered and said, ..."what do kids these days have to aspire to and rebel against their parents with? West Life?"

I laughed my ars* off!

Have you read Take It Like a Man (Boy George's autobiography)? It's good stuff, especially if you're interested in him and in the '80s music scene.

Yes, it was a guilty pleasure - I picked it up at a charity shop!

I have to say about him, that I think he actually has a truly amazing voice. Pure blue-eyed soul. I think it's so easy to forget that or not even realize it because it all gets hidden by his flash exterior. And if I recall from his book, he only formed the band because it just seemed like a cool thing to do!
