Oh you guys are mean!  :D  I really don't think she is that bad. I've seen her interviewed recently a couple of times and she seemed quite down to earth to me. OK she is a stick insect but so are a lot of Hollywood types.

Did you ever see that episode of Will & Grace where they're playing the People magazine game? You flip through the magazine, stop at random pictures, and have to immediately say, "Love him/her!" or "Hate him/her!" No middle ground allowed.  ;)

Actually, I do kind of think Keira Knightley is bad. Leaving aside her face and body, I really don't think she can act. I can never work out how certain actors/actresses end up being the flavour of the month when there are far more talented ones out there.

How about Kate Winslet?  Too old?

Yeah I thought of her but she is probably a bit old for that role, if they need someone early 20s.  I can't really think of anyone in the right age group unless Scarlett Johansson can do an English accent.

I think I'm going to have to re-read Atonement. I honestly can't remember what I thought Cecilia should look/be like. Didn't McEwan describe her as 'horsey' at one point? If so, then maybe KK isn't such a bad choice (acting aside).

I agree with Britwife's idea of casting an unknown, though. It's one of my favourite books, and I think I'd prefer to see it without having preconceived notions about the actors and actresses.

I would like to see it, but not for Keira Knightley. I want to see James MacAvoy!

I saw it last night and it was excellent. Very close to the book and lots of the dialogue was lifted straight out of it.  The ending was slightly different and maybe a wee bit more upbeat... if that's possible. :\\\'(

I don't have a problem with Keira and I thought she was perfect.  I think when she smiles she looks a bit odd (as in the Jonathan Ross show) - probably down to wonky teeth.. but she didn't smile in this film and just looked stunning. Especially climbing out of the pond...She had a great chemistry with Jame McAvoy.

The soundtrack was excellent as well.

I finally saw it last night! Yaye!

I think I liked it. Well, I really liked the second half. A lot. But the first half was ruined for me by one Miss Keira Knightley. God, she's awful. I desperately want to avoid another skinny debate, but she was far too thin for that role! Or for any role, in my opinion. You could see her ribs in her chest and on her back! It turned my stomach when she bent over at one point in that green evening dress. And she was supposed to be sexy and alluring?? Puh-lease. No man would want to touch that bony body. It was impossible to believe.

And don't get me started on that inverse pout thing she does with her mouth/nose. In. Every. Film. She's. In.

I thought James McAvoy was fantastic, though! And since the second half of the film focused more on his character, that was great. And the little girl who played young Briony was awesome. Absolutely awesome!

Haven't seen it yet, but it's been THE news here in Redcar for months - as they filmed the battle scenes in Dunkirk on Redcar beach.  So I'll have to go and see it, if just to say, hey, I know that place!  ;D

Yes, I saw it a week ago & I liked it too!  The parts with James McAvoy were the yummiest.  Keira Knightley... [smiley=bleck.gif]  At least she didn't dominate the entire movie.  One part I remember in which she was wearing this white top or white dress, it didn't look like she had any boobs at all!  I mean - flat as a pancake flat, and that was with the camera doing a side profile shot including her upper torso. :-X

She had the same body profile as the girl playing her little sister!

I was wondering where they filmed those scenes. Thanks for that!

Agree about Keira Knightley...

And James McAvoy was amazing!

Had fun seeing it!  ;)

So much so, I might go see it again with hubby.

Gosh you all are harsh on Keira.  I disagree - thought she was beautiful and looked perfect for the role... And my other half thought she looked hot and definitely WOULD.

I don't think she should be slated for looking flat chested in a film.. Would it be better for her to have fake silicone breasts jutting out????? God, she's what, 22?  Give her a chance for her metabolism to slow down and poop out some kids.

There's a lot of ground between Keira's chest (or lack thereof) and fake breasts! Does it have to be one or the other? Couldn't it have been an actress with at least a hint of natural curves?

Meh. I found her rib cage to be really distracting. It actually spoilt the film for me.

I agree.  There's a scene where she's sat on the steps of her house and you can COUNT her ribs.  Just very uncomfortable to look at.

I don't have a problem with her weight, though...she should've been dressed in something more flattering.  My problem is her acting and her weird face.  She just makes my skin crawl.

As to who should've played her role, after much thought, I think it should've been Rosamund Pike (who also played KK's sister in Pride & Prejudice!).  She's a lovely actress and looks more like the actresses who played Briony.  I can also see a man actually wanting to be with her!   :)

Yeah, Steve was a bit jealous that I've seen it (and liked it), and he didn't.  It's one of his favorite books, btw.  So I might end up seeing it again with him, because now I think he doesn't want to wait for the DVD.  If we do, I'll give an update as to whether he thinks Keira was hot or not! ;) :)

Thanks again for going with me!
