caramel apples
« on: October 24, 2007, 07:04:09 PM »
has anybody made these using store-bought caramels?

if i melt, say, werther's chewy caramels double-boiler style, then just coat the apples, do you think that would do it?

i want to make them for my mother-in-law's halloween party this weekend, but i haven't got a candy thermometer to make caramel from scratch (never done it before, either).

It's been a looooong time, but I *think* that's how we did it when I was a kid. I know for sure my mom never made homemade caramel! That was my grandpa's job. ;)

I just googles some recipes, and they made them the way you're going to, but added either quarter cup of water, or two tablespoons water to the caramels. I guess that's to help them melt. Now I'm going to have to make some!! :D

You could also just melt the caramels with a bit of cream and then slice up the apples and use the caramel as a dip!  Then you can make sure every bite has caramel on it! :)

I forgot about Wrapples! I used those, too! That is, until I discovered Mrs. Prindable's apples. Then I never bothered making my own again. Unfortunately, they don't ship outside the US.  :(

I've never added water to caramel. We always used milk. And we liked to chop our apples up into bite-size peices and then drizzle the caramel all over and eat with a spoon. Caramel in every bite and less messy than a dip! Yum!

Just found out they're going to be selling toffee apples at the deli at my work this week!  I'll have to remember to get one!

i made these on saturday--so freaking easy!

used three bags of sainsbury's brand dairy toffees, popped them into a pyrex bowl with a it of milk & nuked the lot for 20 seconds. kept nuking & stirring every 10 seconds.

ended up with exactly enough lovely creamy caramel for 10 apples.

Am I correct in understanding this?  What they sell as 'toffee apples' here in the UK are those red candy-covered ones -- what I would call 'candy apples' in the US?  (At least that's what they sell in Morrisons, which may not be a good guide to go by.)

But I want a proper caramel apple!  Waaaah! [smiley=bigcry.gif]

No... toffee is caramel.

The red crunchy stuff is 'candied' apple.

Morrisons has had those for sale recently with a sticker saying 'toffee apple' on them. ::)

I was sooo confused! :P
