Turkey time?
« on: November 16, 2007, 09:34:23 PM »
Has anyone gotten their Thanksgiving turkey yet? Every year I decide I order a fresh one from the butchers but I never do. I guess I'll do a frozen one again this year. Has the cost of turkeys gone up since all the culling?

I ordered a frozen one from the butcher yesterday after enquiring about the potential availability of a fresh one for next week....and being laughed at.  Nicely, of course, because that's the kind of guy he is.  But still. :D  He said they won't have started killing them yet - unless I wanted one with bird flu!  My 12lb turkey cost £16.

I ordered one from the fish monger, actually. No problem to get it next week. It's going to be about £26 for a 10lb bird.

I may just get a crown. The kids prefer the white meat anyway and they don't like to pick at the carcass all night like we used to when we were kids. But it's just not the same having just a crown for Thanksgiving. I like the look of the whole bird  ;D  Besides a crown costs nearly as much as the whole bird anyway doesn't it?

Couldn't you make soup with the carcass?

Me? I wouldn't know where to begin! I don't really cook anything but I'm thinking about making it my New Years resolution to learn  [smiley=chef.gif]

I think I may actually just get a chicken. It will just be the two of us, and as I told my husband, for me the turkey is really just a vehicle for the side dishes. As long as I have those, it will still be Thanksgivng to me!

I'll readily admit to being cheap & not-picky about my poultry.  We got a frozen (small) turkey from Tesco the other day for £8.  I think they're on that price until Tuesday-ish.

All your turkey talk make me hanker for a turkey dinner.  We missed Canadian Thanksgiving so I'm going for American (ironically, DH will be in the US for actual Thanksgiving).

Bought a turkey for tomorrow.  Totally frozen.  I will have to defrost it by tomorrow afternoon!

And I found sausage in the freezer section.

..

hey they are THE way to go......still shaped liked a turkey with the legs and wings just has no middle bone in it...and it cooks quicker and it juicy!!! and you don't pay for the extra weight of the bones as well!

I've never heard of a deboned turkey! Do you just get that from the butcher?
