Where did you buy your wedding dress?
« on: November 22, 2007, 02:05:20 PM »
Just curious...I'm in the midst of dress researching (not 'shopping', as I won't be buying anything until after Christmas) & just wanted to see how brides shopped nowadays!

If it's other or there's more to the story, please comment below :).

P.S. Am currently looking at having mine made-to-measure (from a chosen pattern) from an internet company.

I got mine from a sample sale.  I paid less than half the regular price and took it away with me that day.

I went to a boutique shop with the intention of finding a dress and then ordering it online, but it turned out to be about the same price, so I bought it from the shop.

A great shop in Edinburgh's grass market...tried on a few but then settled on my dress since it made such a lovely noise!  And I had it bought and fitted within 6 weeks, no hassles.

Debenhams.  Picked it out - they held it for me - when I went to pick it up it was during a Blue Cross sale, so I got even more off.  It was end of the season line.  Cost me £110, and I was very happy with that.

The shoes were full price, however, as I bought them when I picked out the dress instead of waiting.   ::)

In the US from a bridal shop, but it wasn't very expensive - can't recall how much I paid now, though! A friend brought it over for me when she had a business trip here. I had the final fittings done here by a local seamstress.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Hehe, I figured this thread would get a good response...

I'm just a bit stuck as to how to go about boutique shopping.  There's just SO many in central London...how do I know if a place will within my price range with just flat-out asking how much the dresses cost :P.  I don't want to /sound/ cheap, especially if I'm using a shop with no intention of buying there.  Are there boutiques out there that do reasonably-priced wedding wear?  Most I seem to find are couture!

I have no idea about shops in London, sorry,  The boutique shop that I used was recommended by virtually everyone I asked.  The great thing about it was that they had dresses from £100 right upto £2,500 + so a really good range of both dresses and prices.

I fell in love with a dress I found online:
http://www.foreverbridals.com/gownpix.asp?Style=47125
But rather than buy it, my mum is going to make it and change a few things up.
Give that site a go, if you want! They have some amaaaaazin' gowns! Good luck with your search!  ;D

Hey Carol! I think I know the Grassmarket shop you're referring to, but I don't remember the name. What was it again?

It was most definitely...a THING.

ebay worked for me, although I had to look at a gazillion dresses.  A lot of brides-to-be apparently pick up two or more dresses, so loads are actually new.  For me, it was either ebay or renting, and I was worried about losing a rental.  I didn't like the styles or prices in Japan, either.

I fell in love with my dress online (but with green embroidery and trim - there are photos on my LJ!).  I looked high and low for a sample, since it was a new style, but couldn't find one anywhere - finally, I just ordered it sight unseen through the local bridal shop in Athens.  I want to say it cost $358.  Lucky for me I loved it! :D

(BTW, my votes are for #1 and #3!)

I'm buying mine online, also after Christmas.

Otherwise, I had planned to have a dress made out of one of his white T-shirts.

I ordered my dress online (from bridesave.com -- they're now out of business, unfortunately).  It was a PC Mary's and I think it was about $450.

I never actually looked at dresses in person -- I enjoyed being able to take my time and look at 328792837493 dresses online.  I just found the one I liked, got measured, and ordered!  I think it took about 2 months for the dress to arrive and it was perfect -- didn't need a single alteration.

I ordered my dress online also. It was from Brides R Us. I just now looked up their website and got all sort of mail order brides sites! I guess they went out of business also.
I remember the dress didnt arrive until the day before we got married. I was freaking out! Make sure you allow plenty of time if ordering online!!!
