Those are awesome!!!

A friend and I invented a 'tacky Christmas house' game back when I was in the US. You'd have to drive around and score various houses based on a list of criteria (we developed the elaborate scoring system after getting quite tipsy on eggnog). Points for things on the roof, extra points for Mrs. Claus, points for the three wise men, extra points for all blue lights, points for music, etc. You'd have to make note of the address so it could be verified later. We never did figure who won (saw the most tacky houses), but it was fun doing it!  ;D

Thank you!

One of the things I miss about being in the US at Christmas are the tacky yards!  There are some beauties too on Long Island!  We would bundle in the car and go on a viewing every year.

I think that is what's missing for me and getting into the Holiday Spirit.

There used to be whole neighborhoods that did this in CA. I'm sure there still are. It's amazing how much stuff you can get on one house. I love it!  ;D

Same in RI. The best neighbourhoods were the ... ahem ... slightly mafioso areas. Totally OTT!

One guy always went all out, but not in a Clark Griswold way. He did his own thing. Here are his decorations from 3 or 4 years ago.

Why are they calling them tacky and who is calling them tacky?  Some of them are absolutely beautiful.  Was this some sort of poll created by some organization to say "show us your tacky christmas yards" thereby insuiating that christmas decorations are tacky?  I suppose that it must fall down again to media.  I, for one, am very glad the the states like to celebrate christmas and show their spirit. My British husband was commenting on how much of Britain is such a shame that they don't show their christmas spirit. Ok, I do agree that big inflatables are not my style but lights create an attractive atmosphere.

I laughed so hard I may need to go change my pants  ;D
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Um. I think it's pretty lighthearted. The website starts with this:

TackyChristmasYards.com is NOT a malicious attempt to end all decoration, just a fun challenge to find the most violations. Locating the “best” yard is as much of an art as creating the “best” yard.

This is done in good humor- it is not a political statement.

It then goes on to list "violations" on the right hand side such as:

King Kong Complex Violation: If a giant polar bear is standing anywhere near a mid-sized Santa or the Abominable Snowman is lurking over the manger, do something, quick!

Really. It's supposed to be fun. Sorry if you're offended.

Some are beautiful, yes. And, while I love to see decorated houses like that, I really wouldn't want mine to look that way. There's a fine line between beautiful and over the top, and that's a line that a lot of people seem to ignore! But then that's part of what makes it so much fun!  :)

You definitely need to head our way if you miss Christmas spirit and "tacky" :) or "not so tacky" over the top lawn decor.  Some estates are so well lit you can see them from the motorway.  Though one house takes the cake with 15 inflatables in the front garden... and it's a small garden.

There was a guy who had a house like that in my hometown.

My best friend called it "the house that Christmas threw up on."   ;D ;D ;D
