Did anyone actually eat those 'salads'?  I've looked at tons of them, but never tried any.  Guilty of eating 'ambrosia salad' though.

I can top that. My grandmother used to put vegetables in Jell-o. Seriously. Peas and carrots. It wasn't as vile as it sounds, but you didn't ask for seconds. Grandmother single-handedly discovered the vitamin in, like 1926.

Jell-o molds were once a vital element of American culture.

We're doing the opposite right now being in the US. Actually, on my trips over there, I make it a point to look in the supermarkets at what they have. I'm trying to learn how to make some of those little things from scratch while I'm still in the states and can taste-compare the recipes. I grew up on convenience food, so for me it would be a big deal to not find it and not know how to make it from scratch. I'm definitely finding that some things are much easier to prepare from scratch than I thought they would be.  :)

I don't like American bacon, but I love the UK back bacon! I keep looking for it here to no avail.  :( Part of the reason we want to take a trip to Canada is that it's not too far and we can get some of the British goodies we both love at a much better exchange rate! Well...really for the Falls and MontrĂ©al, but the food is a great bonus!

Honestly, the only thing that caused me difficulty was figuring out the lard/shortening thing for pies.  Once I figured that out, my cooking was basically the same.

Ah--one could ask the same thing about the "jello salads" that were a feature of my midwestern childhood.  How does a combination of jello + canned fruit + Cool Whip + mayonnaise + godknowswhatelse = "salad"?
My grandmother did the canned fruit in jello but thank goodness no mayonaise!

Try looking for "Irish Bacon"-  - which is pretty well available, but I think it may be more like streaky bacon that back bacon- but really yummy.  And there is always Canadian Bacon, readily available, for the more hamlike taste of back bacon.

My Gran from Iowa was known for this... orange jello with grated carrot inside and then a mayo/cool whip topping.. Vile  :-X

Did you know Iowa is actually Jello capitol of the world?  No kidding. They consume more Jello per capita than anyplace else.

I have to admit, I had a real fondness for that "Fourth of July" jello: blue jello, red strawberries, white whipped cream on top.  Not so fond that I've actually made it, but still...if it was here I'd eat it.   :)

That creamy base for Ambrosia consists of mayo and Cool Whip???? [smiley=anxious.gif]

Ambrosia has a lot of variations.  Ours just had whipping cream, canned fruit, marshmallows, coconut flakes.. I think that's it.  Still kinda disgusting.
