No? How come? I'm just interested since I haven't heard that before.

I just see it as a starch - an alternative to rice, pasta, bread, etc.

As far as the government recommended 5 portions of fruit and vegetables - potatoes aren't included as one.

I must have seen that somewhere 'cause that's about how I feel about them. Don't get me wrong, I like them, but I wouldn't count them as a vegetable with dinner. I'd have a vegetable along with them.  :)

Maybe not, but I'm sure red wine is!  Red wine = grapes (same thing)! ;D

I think you may be right - It says so here

Quote
Nutritional Qs & As

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this

true?

A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that's it. Don't waste

them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your

heart will not make you live longer; that's like saying you can extend the

life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on red meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?

A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and

corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an

efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain?

Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy

vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily

allowance of vegetable slop.

Q: Is beer or wine bad for me?

A: Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we

all know, scientists divide everything in the world into three

categories: animal, mineral and vegetable. We all know that beer and

wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements, so

that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a burger and a beer

and enjoy your liquid vegetables.

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?

A: Well, if you have a body, and you have body fat, your ratio is one to

one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular

exercise program?

A: Can't think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain - Good.

Q: If I stop smoking, will I live longer?

A: Nope. Smoking is a sign of individual expression and peace of mind.

if you stop, you'll probably stress yourself to death in record time.

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?

A: You're not listening! Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In

fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad

for you?

Q: What's the secret to healthy eating?

A: Thicker gravy.

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the

middle?

A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You

should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?

A: Are you crazy? HELLO ... Cocoa beans ... Another vegetable!!! "It's

the best feel-good food around!"

Well, I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had

about food and diets. Have a cookie... flour is a veggie!

One more thing: When life hands you lemons, ask for a bottle of tequila

and the salt.
"We don't want our chocolate to get cheesy!"

Potatoes are considered a veg on the U.S. food chart and Asian/vegetarian food pyramids.  Most Latin American countries and Mediterranean consider it a starch.

I feel it is a vegatable.  It has way more in common with other vegetables than it does with bread.

I've read that the Vitamin C in potatoes, when they were discovered in the New World and added to the European diet, was the reason scurvy became so much less common at sea.

I wouldn't have potatoes instead of a vegetable, but I'd have it as one of two vegetables with a meat.

That may be true but the Brits, being a great seafaring people, knew the benefits of Vit C hence picking up the nickname of Limeys due to the barrels of limes they took on long voyages.

Since limes don't grow in the UK I would think the average person would have found potatoes more affordable than limes.  I would assume the limes would have been paid for by the company/government.  They had lime juice, which would probably keep better than potatoes.

Besides potatoes were introduced in the 1600's to the UK.  Limes were only common after the UK had Carribean colonies.

Not that they understood why the potatoes worked.  Apparently it wasn't until 1795 that British Navy accepted the idea of citrus juice.

I have always thought of a potato as a vegetable. I never considered a "starch" as it's own category either. I have a friend who I know does though, she says she serves a salad, a veg, and a starch with every meal.

I think potato a starch/bread according to the food pyramid, isn't it? I've also never thought of it as veg, maybe cause I love potatoes so much they can't be also good for me. ;D

To a certain degree I consider potatoes veg. But to be a properly balanced meal, there has to be some other type of veg with them that has more vitamins and less starch in it. So a meal of meat with corn and potatoes would not be as ideal as meat with broccoli and potatoes.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yeah I see your point. Although a meat meal with corn and potatoes does sound really yummy. :)

Hmmm...to me a meant, corn, and potatoes sounds perfectly good, two veg...

Why doesn't corn count? I'm really trying to learn because as I've posted before, I have no clue about well-rounded meals, I'm doing good to be letting go of the boxed stuff!

It's what each food supplies. Because both potatoes and corn are starchy and high in carbs, and low in things traditionally found in veggies (vitamins, fiber,) the meal scews too much towards "bread" group and is therefore not balanced, as it's commonly understood. This is just a really rough summary, btw.

I guess I should read more about this. I had no idea! Growing up, when we did have vegetables with dinner, it was usually corn and mashed potatoes.
