Same here. I never even tasted Velveeta until I was an adult.  :-\\\\
This is me as well.  However, I've never had Velveeta at all.  I always wanted to of course, seeing the commercials for it.  I mean it melted so well, so much better then the cheddar I was always using. (I am a marketing person's dream)

I've never knowingly eaten Velveeta.  :(

Jeez.  I thought my parents were bad with no pop tarts or store bought cookies.  But Kool-aid?  That's bad. :)

My mother didn't do mac n cheese from a box either, and definitely no Kool-Aid! It was homemade everything and lovely real orange juice. I'm happy to be the freak she created!  ;D

No orange juice, just grapefruit. Yum!

We were allowed KoolAid and peanut butter, but we had no Velveeta or boxed mac & cheese... although i did eat kraft m&c almost daily for lunch at a friends house in high school.
We weren't allowed PopTarts, or packaged cakes like Ding Dongs or Twinkies, and the only cereals we were allowed were Shredded Wheat, Grape Nuts or Bran Flakes.    And the only non-homemade 'cookies' in the house were graham crackers, but my mom used to make frosting and sandwich it between 2 grahams, which was nice.

Thanks to a mom who couldn't cook and wasn't very discerning in the health or taste categories, I grew up with junk galore:

Velveeta, Kool-Aid, Hawaiian Punch, Pop Tarts, Fruity Pebbles, Franken-Berry and Count Chocula and a host of other characters, Spaghetti-O's ("Uh-oh...Spaghetti O's!"), Cup-a-Soup, Oodles of Noodles, Cheeto-s, Hydrox (the "cheap Oreos"), Entenman's cakes, Chips Ahoy, etc, etc.  :D

Same with us.  Only we had graham crackers and cream cheese as a treat sometimes. :) And we very rarely had crisps.  Only in the summer with sandwiches.

Come to think of it, we never had crisps either!
Only Doritos once in awhile...

We had crisps, but I never met a Dorito until I was out of high school!

I hesitate to say that I "wasn't allowed" those artificial things. It never would have occurred to me to ask for them because I didn't know they existed. My friends were mostly the same as I was and grew up with homemade stuff, so I didn't even get a taste of it at anyone else's house.

(I should explain that part of my childhood was spent in a country where a lot of those prepackaged convenience snacks didn't exist.)

Okay, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who has tried cheese-singles-substitute-for-Velveeta!  Hadn't thought about using Dairylea slices, though - probably a better flavor than store brand singles.  Thanks for the tip!

we were never allowed any diet or sugar-free stuff. anything that carried a label warning "this product may cause cancer in laboratory animals" wasn't welcome in our house.

i'm sticking to that rule now with my own kid.

Me too!  Had to sleep at a friend's house to experience "sugar cereal".  Other kids had pizza or bologna and american cheese on white bread, chips (crisps), and Coke in their lunch.  I had a meatloaf sandwich on whole wheat, apple and celery sticks, a box of raisins, and never less than 100% juice.  Moms and their crazy ideas about nutrition.   :P
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Welcome to my world! My mom could cook, but we had a mixture of homemade and not. I was thinking the other day how I could go for some Spaghetti-O's.

Ha ha!  :D  My mom had a repetoire of about 5 things she could make, and most of them not very good.  Her meatloaf was good, though.  Oh we also ate lots of meat growing up--lots and lots of it (I'm a vegetarian these days) because my grandfather was a butcher!
