I know this probably doesn't count but last night I was at work and I had a call from a lady who was from Arizona and was sent too Alaska some BFE town in the middle of nowhere. She told me that gas was like $11 a gallon, milk was $9 a gallon, a loaf of bread was $5, she went too the store and found a 10lb turkey and it said "$7.50" and she looked alittle closer and it was $7.50 a pound...a $75 10lb jenny-o turkey. PLUS it was -4 degrees outside. She told me she's never complaining again when she gets back to AZ about anything.

Just thought I'd share lol cus it made me realize how good we have it

I stand corrected! Just got back from Morrisions and a bumper pack of peppers (4 medium to small peppers) are now £1.99 and for 1 large single pepper £0.99!! 99p for 1 lousey pepper!  :o

Really? Just checked my bill from Asda - bag of 7 small peppers were £1.38

As a student on a strict budget, I'm really having to watch what I buy. Oh well, I need to go on a diet anyways.

I am a cashier and I keep getting complaints about the prices going up and all that I can do is listen to them rant.  It isn't my fault that the prices are going up.

I can see the prices going up, gas drives me nuts! I try to only buy it on Mondays and Wednesdays when it's on sale. It's about $3.50 a gallon right now.

Wow, those Alaska prices sound out of control, I've heard Hawaii is very high-priced as well.

I'm really glad I started this grocery game thing. I've tried to make most of my meals from scratch, but it is nice to have certain things as convenience food (like rice mixes), chips, etc..., plus it is good if you're a meat-eater because it tells you rock-bottom prices for that too. I'm actually spending less on groceries right now.

Augh I used to hate that when I worked as a cashier, I think customers think you have full control over what the store charges!

The food prices are definitely noticeably higher but I just have to console myself with the thought that at least I wont starve to death because of it like some people will.   :-\\\\

This could really be a huge issue for a lot of people. I spoke to my Mom the other day (in the US) and she and her siblings are going to get a Sam's Club or Costco membership and stock up on loads of stuff soon. Rice, pasta, and meat in particular.

We're planning to go to the Newcastle Costco in June to stock up as much as we can.

I used to buy organic fruit and veg, along with dairy products.  Now I just go for what is priced the best and is grown locally (or close to local).
We go through a lot of fresh veg as the girls have a variety for their lunch each day.
Still use the butchers for meat, but have cut back on what we buy.
I'm back into baking my own bread so I'm saving there.
And for petrol...I paid £1.12/litre for it today.  Ended up costing £27 and my tank was only half empty.  I drive a Honda Jazz so it isn't a big car or anything.

FYI, I go to Costco a lot and I don't think that their meat is much cheaper than the supermarket. They do a big pack of Mince, and it is no where near as cheap as the supermarket meat is. The quality is okay, but I find Morrisons to have superb prices on meat for a great price. I shop at Costco weekly, so I watch the prices.

I don't think we (my DH and I) will stock up on meat. We don't have the room in our freezer here. But in the US it may be a different story (i.e. for my Mom).

We have a Morrisons but I loathe shopping at them but I can't really tell you why. :P

I think we'll stick to our local butcher for meat but cut down on what we buy and eat more veg-based meals.

We've cut back our meat consumption a LOT since going free-range (it's often just not available, so we go veg), and I can attest, the bill is so much lower.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.
