online calorie counters?
« on: June 19, 2008, 11:06:28 AM »
Does anyone use an online calorie counter?  I just heard about the Daily Plate (www.dailyplate.com) but is it worth it?  I am not sure I can really be bothered or if I will just become really obsessed with it.... :-\\\\

www.foodfocus.co.uk

This one allows you to input recipes. I think if others suggest some other sites, maybe trial and error is the best way to see what works for you?

I just made my profile on Food Focus and I'm really excited!  It looks like the motivation I need...  I just hope I don't get too obsessive!

I have used Fitday in the past and found it fairly straightforward and flexible. I think they have something you can sign up and pay to use but I used the freebie.

I joined food focus and i like it!  I just need to find the equivalent of the food I eat in Japan on the site :)  I plan to collect that this week and start adding on Monday when I get back from my weekend holiday.  Thanks ladies!

I can't say enough great things about Sparkpeople.com. I lost 50 pounds with them over 9months about two years ago and I've kept it off since then. It really does help you to change your whole outlook and lifestyle and it works. Oh, and it's free! I see those adverts for Tesco diets which offer less and cost a monthly fee and it makes me want to scream!

Great thread! I'm sure someone will need this information, so I'm bumping by adding my own experiences.

I've tried fitday.com, sparkpeople.com and nutridiary.com based on the recommendations of others.  I think, like a previous poster mentioned, you have to play around with them to see which one suits you.  Initially, I was very frustrated and thought I'd never get the hang of it.  But now I keep track of my calories everyday.  It's helpful for knowing how much I can eat before gaining weight. I like to see my average calories, protein, carbs, etc., too.  I am a carboholic and this way I am accountable.  It's scary when you think you haven't eaten that much, then plug in the calories and  :o

Foodwise, it all goes to hell for me at this time of year anyway, but come January 1 I start eating clean again, watching the portions.  It only takes me a few weeks to get back to my "happy weight."  I don't believe in suffering!

Good luck to everyone!

Starting today with Food Focus, i like it so far, wish i had the option to do pounds but a quick type into google helps with stones.  It's good because it has a data base of UK food brands which makes things so much easier! Going to stick with it. I need to cut wasteful calories out and try to drop this extra 2 stone :/

For anyone that's using FoodFocus you've probably noticed its down at the moment due to a Bandwidth issue.  If you're looking for something else to use instead / in the meantime until they (hopefully) get it back up and running there's Tesco's Healthy Living Tracker, which is free.  It kind of works similar to WW in the sense that it gives you a daily points allowance and you can also track your exercise.  I've only just found it, so can't go into more details, but thought I'd put it out there.   ;)

Thanks Teletabby.

I am wondering when it will be back, and was waiting but now will try to join spark people. I found FFocus soo convienet because it listed a lot of UK brands ready to be entered. Oh well. I have to keep track some how so I'll try spark people.

Someone update if they see FoodFocus back online. Ta!

After using FF, I found Sparkpeople extremely cumbersome and awkward.  Just sayin'  :-\\\\
