Milk in a bag....pros and cons
« on: June 30, 2008, 08:53:12 PM »
I saw that my local Waitrose is now carrying milk in bags, you know the kind that you pop into a plastic jug in the fridge.

I have a 2 year old and we go through probably 20 pints of milk a week, thats a lot of plastic containers. I don't fancy the milk delivery, because I would probably run out anyway and have to get milk from Morrisons anyway...

So has anyone gotten milk in bags? Does it stay fresh? Does it absorb smells from the fridge? Pros Cons? Any opinions?

Nothing to add but I remember seeing it on ITV's morning show a couple weeks ago because certain Sainsbury's were supposed to have started selling it too.

I'm curious to know more myself.   ;D

We had milk in a bag at school when I was a kid! You'd ram a straw into it and drink it straight out of the bag. Yes, you can imagine the fun some kids tried to have with that!

So you're supposed to put it into your own jug?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

It's not so different.  We had it all the time in India.  You just pour the milk into another container.  I prefer it to the wasteful plastic containers or the stupid Tetra packs.

That is such a Canadian (Ontarian) thing from my childhood. Never had any problem with freshness. I actually feel weirdly nostalgic now.

We used them in the 70's in BC, they're fine.  Haven't seen them for a looong time!

Not very keen on the idea.  Seems like one more thing my husband could spill in the fridge.   :-\\\\

I couldn't remember if we had them in BC or not, too. I guess it was a mark of my childhood, period. When I go back, I haven't seen them in ages. Have they been phased out in Canada / some provinces?

How big would you be planning to cut the hole?  ??? :) I don't think we spilt milk any more than any other type of milk container. :)

You're probably less clumsy.   ;D

Doesn't the smell or everything in the fridge get into the milk though?  I find milk really bad for absorbing smells.

You could always clip the bag shut.  No problem in our house, we probably used two bags a day.  (Or more.. 5 kids.)  No idea why they stopped selling them.. or when, but I don't think you can buy them anymore.

Ahh milk always came in a bag at summer camp and at college, huge bags of milk that would would go into the milk machine... always so cold and always so good - a bit different for home, but I imagine it would still taste just as good

So you're supposed to put it into your own jug?

No, they sell a special jug for it - about £2. I think Sainsburys has started doing it in certain stores to test it out....

OMG I remember those at camp...with the white pipe spout, and you put it into the GIANT icebox...I miss summer camp desperately.

This is what the bag looks like

And then you pop it into a jug

Look at how happy she looks!
The jug in the picture is different from the jug they had at Waitrose...
I might try it, the jug is £1.95, if I don't use it for the milk, I can use it for iced tea!

Wow, that looks pretty cool!  I've never seem milk in a bag before, but it seems like a good idea.
